Heartbroken family of Daniel Anjorin, 14, who died in London sword attack pay tribute in emotional statement

The sword attack took place in Hainault, London

The heartbroken family of Daniel Anjorin, who died in the London sword attack earlier this week, have paid tribute in an emotional statement.

Daniel, who was a 'much-loved' pupil and a keen footballer at the Bancroft's private school in Woodford Green, was killed in a sword attack as he walked to school in Hainault, east London, on Tuesday morning (30 April).

The Metropolitan Police previously shared that the 14-year-old was among five people injured in total during the sword attack.

They shared: "Police and other emergency services are in Hainault, east London, at a serious incident in which a man with a sword has been arrested.

"We were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area. There were reports people have been stabbed.

"At this time we understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers.

"We are awaiting an update on the condition of those injured. A 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene and he is in custody."

London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, also shared his own sentiments on the attack.

He said: "I'm sure I speak for the entire city when I say our thoughts are with this young child and his family.

"It breaks my heart not only that this child has lost his life, but two members of our emergency services have risked their own safety to make sure others weren't injured.

"It shows the danger our police officers face every day and I thank them for their bravery."

Tributes have since flooded in for the school child, including one from his headteacher, Simon Marshall, who wrote a letter to parents expressing 'great sadness and shock' at Daniel’s death.

According to the BBC, he described the teenager as a 'much-loved' member of the school, and added: "I had been intending to write to you once the news has become public, but I understand that many within our community may already be aware of events yesterday.

"It is therefore with great sadness and shock that I am writing to inform you of the tragic death of Daniel Anjorin, one of our pupils.

"Our thoughts and prayers at this moment are with Daniel’s family and friends.

"More details will be forthcoming over the coming hours and days, but for now, our focus is on supporting the members of our community and particularly those who knew Daniel well."

The statement went on: "It seems scarcely believable that less than a year on from the terrible death of Grace O’Malley-Kumar in the Nottingham attacks we are facing fresh sorrow."

Daniel's family have now also released a tribute of their own to Sky News calling him a 'wonderful child' who was 'well-loved' and 'hard-working'.

They added that his death now 'leaves a gaping wound in the family'.

"No family should have to go through what we are experiencing today," they said. "Any family will understand it's an absolute tragedy."

The 36-year-old suspect, named as dual Spanish-Brazilian national, Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, is now due to appear in court following the horrific attack.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (2 May), having also been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article.
