Peaky Blinders star star Helen McCrory has died aged 52 following a secret battle with cancer, it has been announced.

The actor and mother-of-two, also known for her roles in Skyfall and the Harry Potter movies, passed away following a "heroic" battle with cancer, her husband Damien Lewis said.

Damian confirmed the tragic news in a statement on Friday, saying: "I'm heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully as home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family."

Helen had not publicly shared the news of her illness, and appeared on Good Morning Britain just weeks before her death to discuss her charity work for The Prince's Trust.

Helen, who played Birmingham matriarch Polly Gray in hit series Peaky Blinders, was expected to appear in the upcoming season 6 which is currently still filming. It is not yet known whether the actor's death will affect the script and plot.

Of the much-loved franchise, which was rumoured to have a spinoff movie in the works, she recently told NME: "I don't think that [creator Steven Knight] intends to stop writing so I don't think I need to brace myself [for the end].

"He always goes, 'So when we finish that we're going to do the film, and the ballet'. I don't think anyone has informed him that it's stopping. I'll carry on as long as the scripts are there."
