A sentence I never thought I'd write - Donald Trump's new burgundy scarf has got everyone talking.

That's right, the US president, 79, has become a hotly debated fashion topic after he wore an outfit that's quite different to his usual style, and people think they know the reason why.

On Saturday (22 November), Trump spoke to members of the press before departing the White House on Marine One in Washington, D.C.

However, it wasn't a shocking comment or new policy that drew attention, but instead the Republican leader's outfit - a black wool button-up coat and burgundy scarf.

Now, we're used to seeing Trump in his signature black or navy suit with a white shirt and red tie, so this is somewhat of a dramatic new look for the president.

And it's sent the internet crazy, with social media users convinced they know what prompted the style switch up.

Hilariously, people think that Trump was inspired by none other than the new New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani recently made history after becoming the Big Apple's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa.

At 34 years old, he was also the first Millennial to take the position, with his very fashionable wife Rama Duwaji becoming NYC's first-ever Gen Z first lady.

Trump has not exactly kept it a secret that he's not a fan of the Democratic socialist and previously even threatened to withhold funding from the city if he were to be elected.

People were then surprised that on Friday (21 November), the political leaders met in the White House and things were shockingly cordial, with Trump even saying he hopes Mamdani will be 'really great mayor' and adding that he was 'confident that he can do a very good job'.

And many have even gone as far as to think that Trump could have been inspired by the new mayor's stylish suits and silver rings, hence his unexpected outfit over the weekend.

One Twitter user penned: "Alert. Trump wore a coat and scarf and now the internet is freaking out."

While a second added: "Google searches for burgundy scarfs spiked yesterday after Trump pulled off an all-time fit. Fashion icon."

And a third quipped: "Trump’s new wardrobe retrofit is being mocked online, with many politicos referring to his adornment of a turtleneck and scarf as the ‘Mamdami effect’ (a testament to trump’s affectionate interaction with his new political crush)."

Someone else joked: "Trump when Mamdani gifted him the scarf."

While another agreed: "Mamdani cooked so hard Trump stole his fit."

One user even pulled up a photo of Mamdani wearing a similar outfit and penned: "BREAKING: Trump COPIES Mamdani’s outfit. Who wrote it BETTER?"
