The way Blue Ivy Carter got around the Met Gala's age restriction has been revealed, with the teenager being granted a 'special exception'.

Beyoncé fans went wild when they realised that the American superstar, 44, would be attending the star-studded fashion event for the first time in a decade - and she wasn't alone.

The singer walked the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art steps with her husband, Jay-Z, and their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, 14, on Monday (4 May).

For this year's Met Gala, the theme was Fashion Is Art, with guests invited to explore 'their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form' and to 'celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history'.

And Beyoncé certainly knocked it out of the park in a glamorous gown by designer Olivier Rousteing, featuring glittering crystal embellishments which gave the illusion of a skeleton, a dramatic feathered train, and a shimmering crystal headpiece.

Meanwhile, Blue Ivy opted for a white midi dress with a balloon hemline and a matching jacket, while Jay-Z wore a black suit with a double-breasted waistcoat and a jacket with a long tail.

However, questions were raised over how Blue Ivy was allowed to attend at just 14 years old, when typically, the Met Gala is an event for those aged 18 and over.

But she wasn't the only young attendee, as Nicole Kidman also brought along her daughter, Sunday Rose, 17, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Keith Urban.

The age restriction dates back to the 2018 Gala, when the theme was 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination'.

At the time, then-15-year-old Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler told The Hollywood Reporter, "I can't go, because I'm not old enough."

An event organiser later confirmed: "It's not an appropriate event for people under 18."

Though, as the 2026 Gala proves, it looks like this rule wasn't exactly set in stone, as both Blue Ivy and Sunday Rose were able to attend with their famous mothers.

And according to E! News, there's a specific reason why.

How exactly was Blue Ivy and Sunday Rose able to attend this year's Met Gala?

This is because their parents are chaperones and co-chairs at the prestigious event.

As per Forbes, their important role is to help influence the evening's theme, the guest selections, the dinner, and the performances, so pretty much everything.

Kidman revealed back in March that her teen daughter, who's an aspiring model, would be accompanying her to the event.

She said on the Las Culturistas podcast: “I’m so, so happy, and my daughter Sunday will be coming. She loves fashion.”

And speaking to Vogue on the red carpet about her own daughter, Beyoncé gushed, "It feels surreal [to be back] because my daughter’s here. She looks so beautiful. It’s incredible to be able to share it with her, and I think she looks so incredible."

Tyla has contacted the Met Gala for comment.

What do the Met Gala co-chairs actually do?

While Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute handle the actual planning of the Met Gala, the co-chairs play a major role in shaping the event.

The role of co-chair goes beyond the traditional hosting duties. It’s believed they oversee the guest list, interior design, and even help curate the highly anticipated menu to bring the chosen theme to life, though Wintour has the final say.

Often influential figures in fashion, film, music, or sports, they act as public faces of the Met Gala and ultimately attract media attention, high-profile guests and donors - it is a fundraising event after all.

Who were the 2026 Met Gala co-chairs?

The co-chairs for the 2026 Met Gala were Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Vogue’s global editorial director Anna Wintour.

It marked Kidman’s third time as a co-chair; she previously held the position in 2003 and 2005.

Beyoncé, who last graced the Met steps in 2016, took on the role of co-chair for the first time. However, the singer served as an honorary chair back in 2013.

Despite being a regular on the Met Gala red carpet, it was also Williams’ debut as co-chair, following in the footsteps of her sister, Serena, who was appointed to the role in 2019.

As lead sponsors of the 2026 Met Gala, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos served as honorary chairs for the evening.
