Ariana Grande defended after reporter asked 'sick' question on Golden Globes red carpet

Fans of the Wicked actress have hit out at the news outlet for their controversial line of questioning

A Golden Globes journalist has found themselves in hot water this week, after asking Ariana Grande a rather controversial question on the red carpet.

And let's just say, fans of the Wicked actress are not best pleased.

After returning to acting following a successful career in pop music, the former Disney star received her first Golden Globe nomination this year.

Grande was cast as 'Glinda the Good' in the cinematic adaptation of the Wizard of Oz prequel, and her performance colossally impressed viewers - many of whom praised her for her unexpectedly accurate comedic timing.

It was hardly a surprise, therefore, that she and Elphaba co-star Cynthia Eviro were both nominated at the acclaimed 2025 festivities.

Alongside Selena Gomez for her role in Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist's Felicity Jones, The Substance star Margaret Qualley, and Isabella Rossellini for her role in Conclave, the ex-Victorious actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

But ultimately, it was Zoe Saldaña who walked away with the grand prize.

That said, however, it sounds as though Ariana was just happy to have received her first ever nomination.

"We were just crying together and screaming, and we sent each other flowers immediately," she previously told PEOPLE of the moment she and Erivo - who also lost out on Best Actress - received the news.

"I'm just really deeply proud of her and of us together and the work that we've done. And to see it be recognized is just so — the weight is more than I could have imagined."

Unfortunately, however, one moment from Sunday night's soiree may have somewhat tainted the star's experience.

Upon her arrival on the red carpet, Ariana began by posing for the cameras before chatting to press on the sidelines, where she ran into a reporter from Access Hollywood.

In a awkward interaction has seemingly gone viral online, the journalist in question begins by asking the former Disney star who the first person was that she called after learning she'd been nominated for an accolade.

After Ariana revealed that the answer is her mother Joan, however, the reporter then prompted, 'grandmother still alive?'.

The 32-year-old was thankfully able to maintain her composure following the controversial line of questioning, revealing that her 99-year-old 'Nonna' was still alive and kicking, and was the second person she'd called.

Access Hollywood reportedly cut the cringe-worthy aspect of the interaction from their own coverage, seeing Ariana reveal that her cast-mate Erivo and her acting coach were the next calls she made.

That hasn't stopped fans of the singer catching wind of the dubious moment, with one hitting out on social media: "THIS IS SICK?"

Another demanded: "why would she ask it like that?"

"that is such a risky question, why would she ask that," a third pointed out.

Tyla has contacted Access Hollywood for comment.
