Jennifer Lopez made unusual decision before marrying Ben Affleck that could have impact on their divorce

Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from husband Ben Affleck after just two years of marriage

Fans have been left concerned for Jennifer Lopez after it was reported that she failed to make a pretty vital decision before wedding now-ex Ben Affleck.

Lopez, 55, or Affleck, 52, tied the knot back in 2022 after almost two decades apart.

The couple - lovingly nicknamed 'Bennifer' back in the day - previously dated in the early noughties, before going their separate ways in 2004.

While musician Lopez went on to marry three times - including to her long-time pal Marc Anthony, with whom she welcomed twins - Affleck wed Jennifer Garner, with the couple welcoming three children of their own.

Fans were delighted back in 2022, therefore, when it was revealed that Lopez and Affleck had rekindled their love affair after respectively divorcing their former partners.

They exchanged vows twice in the months that followed - first in a Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022, and next in a second ceremony in Georgia just a month later.

Apparently, however, prior to making their relationship official in the eyes of the law, Lopez opted to turn down a pretty important agreement when it comes to celebrity romances - a prenup.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a prenuptial agreement is a legal document which sees couples outlining their intentions as to how their assets will be divided if they ever decide to part ways.

For high-earning individuals, it can be seen as a means of securing your financial stability if the worst happens - naturally, therefore, they're quite common in celebrity courtships.

Individuals who opt not to get a prenup, however, could see their finances divided as per the discretion of the courts.

On top of this, in traditional relationships, those marrying in later life or for a second time could risk losing their pension on their divorce, which would otherwise be protected if a prenup was signed.

And according to several media reports, the couple opted not to sign the legal arrangement before to saying 'I do'.

As such, Lopez reportedly didn't mention any aspects of such an arrangement in her petition for divorce.

As per documents obtained by the BBC - as well as several other news outlets - the former couple must share their financial information in the proceedings, including their respective current incomes, expenses, properties and debts.

The pair are compelled to divulge this information, as per divorce law in the US.

According to DivorceNet, this information needs to made apparent early on in order to divide the couple's 'martial estate'.

The website further states that if the two parties cannot agree on how to divide everything, then a judge will do so instead - dependant on the individual state's property division laws.

Lopez has 60 days to file for financial disclosure, while Affleck will have another 60 days once hers is filed, to do so himself, as per the BBC.

However, failure to complete these financial-update expectations could result in a court-imposed sanction, which could subsequently see the duo forking up even more funds in monetary fines.
