After mass speculation, the reason why Jennifer Lopez this week filed for divorce from her husband, actor Ben Affleck, has finally been revealed.

News of the Hollywood couple's split broke on Tuesday (21 August), after fans had been left confused over the status of their relationship following several major signs of trouble in paradise.

A source told the Daily Mail previously that the pair - who'd dated back in the early noughties before rekindling in 2022 - had 'finalised the divorce papers' a month prior, but were 'waiting for the right time to drop them'.

Speaking to press, the 'insider' told the publication: "At that time, they will release a joint statement that will say how they have much love for each other and how they fought to make it work, but couldn’t."

As per court documents obtained by the BBC on Tuesday, the 'Jenny From The Block' singer made the decision to legally end their marriage, two years to the date of the second wedding ceremony in Georgia, following an initial Las Vegas soiree.

According to the documents, J. Lo listed their separation date as 26 April.

Now, in a surprising update, the reasoning behind the 'Jenny From The Block' singer's decision to end her marriage to Gone Girl actor Ben has been revealed.

As per further court documents obtained by Page Six, 55-year-old Jennifer cited 'irreconcilable differences' when asked to give a reason for her request.

A commonly used reason for marriage terminations - especially in the often-private celebrity realm - Girlings Solicitors describes 'irreconcilable differences' as 'disagreements between people, especially two married people that cannot be resolved'.

This isn't the first time that 'Bennifer' fans have been forced to come to terms with their pair's decision to split.

Jennifer and Ben were first romantically linked in the early noughties, having met on the set of Gigli back in 2001.

By 2004, however, they'd parted ways, citing the mass media 'scrutiny' that their relationship suffered as the reason.

In 2022, however, after almost two decades apart, they rekindled their romance and tied the knot (twice!), leading fans to believe they'd found their happy ending.

Sadly, though, it wasn't long before cracks started showing in their newly-reunited romance.

Earlier this year, mother-of-two Jennifer was seen holidaying separately from her hubby, and opted not to wear her wedding ring on 4th of July weekend, which she also spent alone.

Last month, the couple were also reported to have put their 12-bedroom, 24-bathroom California mansion on the market for $68,000,000.

And back in June, fans noticed that Affleck wasn't in attendance for the premiere of his wife's Netflix movie Atlas in Mexico - where she sensationally responded directly to divorce rumours when asked by a reporter.

"You know better than that," she warned at the time.
