Miley Cyrus fans had clever theory about hit song years before she was sued for allegedly copying Bruno Mars

Miley Cyrus fans had clever theory about hit song years before she was sued for allegedly copying Bruno Mars

Fans think Miley Cyrus' 'Flowers' has a subtle meaning

Fans think there's a clever meaning behind Miley Cyrus’ hit song ‘Flowers’, and more people are finding out about it now the singer is being sued.

That’s right, singers can be sued if a song sounds remotely like another, and that’s a real shame.

Not only has Miley been sued for her ‘Flowers’ hit for copyright infringement, but the plaintiff claims her song would have never been created had it not been for Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’.

This massive hit came out last year in 2023 and won Record of the Year at the Grammys, as well as Best Pop Solo Performance - but Tempo Music Investments, an investment platform claiming to own a share of the copyright in Mars' song, claims the 'chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions and lyrics' were taken 'intentionally' from the 2012 song.

However, Mars himself isn't even named as a plaintiff in the documents.

In documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music Investments said there are 'many musical similarities' with Mars’ hit: "It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that 'Flowers' would not exist without 'When I Was Your Man'.” Damn.

But even if it was inspired by the song, fans believe there’s a special meaning behind Cyrus' lyrics.

The lyrics from her track read: “I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don't understand / I can take myself dancing, and I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

While Mars’ read: “I should have bought you flowers and held your hand / Should have gave you all my hours when I had the chance / Take you to every party 'cause all you wanted to do was dance.”

To fans, her lyrics are a subtle dig at her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, who she got engaged to in 2012 before they split in 2013. They went on to rekindle their romance and wed in 2018, but they divorced in 2020.

She even released the song on Liam’s 33rd birthday, on January 13.

It all boils down to a time where Liam allegedly dedicated Mars’ song to his wife, and due to their messy breakup, she was flipping the script on what she can do for herself.

Kind of like a strong, independent woman anthem that explains why she doesn’t need a man in her life.

Ultimately, fans believe that ‘Flowers’ is the female perspective from Mars’ song, which talks about all the things the regrets in his relationship, and things he should have done for the woman who has now found happiness with another man.

As Mars isn’t named on the lawsuit, some actually think he gave her his blessing to write the track, which some also think features a nod at Jennifer Lawrence, hinting that Liam had been unfaithful - though this isn't something that has been proven to be true.

Miley spoke about her divorce from Liam last year during a concert, where she told fans that it was a ‘f**king disaster’.

She previously told Grazia: "There was too much conflict. When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone.

"I don’t get off on drama or fighting."
