Selena Gomez has refreshingly honest response to people commenting about her weight

The 'Emilia Pérez' actress admitted it can be difficult to tune out of online trolling

Whilst some celebs might be able to turn a blind eye to online trolling, Selena Gomez has this week claimed it's easiest said than done.

During an appearance on the latest episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the 32-year-old discussed her approach to weight-based criticism specifically.

For those in need of a reminder, Selena has been candid about her body confidence battles for several years now, as part of conversations regarding her ill health.

The actress was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, and in 2017, she announced a break from the entertainment industry after undergoing a complicated kidney transplant.

She also revealed last year that she'd been diagnosed with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and was unlikely to be able to carry her own children as a result. All of these ailments, Selena says, have had an impact on her physical appearance.

"It depends on even the month, to be honest," she explained in a 2019 interview with Giving Back Generation. "So, for me I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. That got to me big time. That really messed me up for a bit."

The former Disney star has also battled turbulent mental health in recent years, having opened up previously about her struggles with both anxiety, depression and bipolar.

Naturally, therefore, being subjected to image-orientated isn't something she's able to brush off very easily.

Speaking on this week's podcast, Selena admitted to regularly checking the comments left on her social media uploads - despite the knowledge that doing so will knock her confidence.

"I fall victims to looking at things," she courageous confessed on Monday (24 Mar). "It doesn’t add anything to your life. It’s just so difficult from the choices, the people you date.

"It’s like nobody cares about that stuff with men."

Touching on her body in particular, the brunette beauty: "I think we just carry a lot. My weights a big one too. Everybody just has something to say and it’s really making me sad.

"Not even sad—no I’m not a victim—but I think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that. But it’s true."

Selena confessed that she finds red carpet events the hardest to manage in terms of criticism.

"This isn’t news to anybody that women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance, to what they are wearing, to everything," the Only Murders In The Building star explained.

"When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I’m saying, 'I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.'"

Speaking of high-profile events, however, Selena has been known to clap back at trolls when their hateful remarks get the better of her.

In November, she was forced to defend her appearance whilst attending the American French Film Festival in LA - where she promoted her latest project, musical-comedy, Emilia Pérez.

Donning a black ruched dress, the movie star posed with her hands placed low down in front of her stomach - something a handful of critics believed insinuating she was hiding her body in some way.

"This makes me sick," Gomez hit back at the speculation on TikTok video. "I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up."

The Rare Beauty founder continued at the time: "I don't care that I don't look like a stick figure. I don't have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I'm just human."

You tell 'em, girl.
