Jason Mraz gave sad reason for keeping his sexuality a secret most his life

Jason Mraz gave sad reason for keeping his sexuality a secret most his life

Jason Mraz came out in 2018 and has explained why he didn't do it sooner

American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz has made a heart-breaking admission about his decision not to come out as queer during the height of his fame.

Perhaps best known for his 2008 hit 'I'm Yours', Jason went on to achieve commercial success and won two Grammy awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Jason came out as bisexual in June 2018, when he wrote a 'love letter' addressed to the LGBTQ community during Pride month.

He included the lines: "I am bi your side / All ways."

In a July 2018 interview with Billboard, Jason shared: "I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, 'Wow, does that mean I am gay?'"

Jason and his wife, Christina Carano, were married in 2015 and divorced last year.

And in a recent interview with Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson on Dinner’s on Me podcast, 47-year-old Jason has shared why he waited until that time specifically to share his sexuality.

He said: "In the ’90s, being gay was like [the] punchline of a joke. and I didn’t want to be the punchline of a joke.

The singer went on to explain that when he was a teenager, he decided to keep his 'nose down' and attempt to discover ways in which he 'could instead get out and see the world one day'.

Jason grew up in Virginia and explained the impact that had on his journey.

He added: "I still took with me the conservative street that I grew up on, and that was very hard to ignore or to break out of.

“I was very shy and and scared of what my family would say, or what my hometown would think or just whatever.”

He then clarified that he doesn't wish to 'throw anybody under the bus', and added: "My parents are very supportive. I love them very much.”

Jason divulged to podcast host Jesse that he feels like a 'late bloomer'.

He went on to admit that it feels as though his life is 'just starting'.

The star concluded: by saying “I love where I am and I feel so much love for myself finally that can only enhance the next relationship. When I find one.”
