The Perfect Couple viewers call out major 'hole in ending' in Netflix thriller after binge-watching series

Netflix viewers have been left with a load of unanswered questions after finished The Perfect Couple

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week or so, you'll know all about The Perfect Couple, which has been taking Netflix by storm.

The chilling new thriller, which boasts a star-studded cast complete with Nicole Kidman and Eve Hewson, has received some rave reviews since its release last week (5 September) and has already proved itself one of the streamer's biggest hitters after climbing to the 'No. 1 in TV Programmes Today' spot.

However, with all that said, Netflix viewers haven't held back with their criticisms over the major 'hole' in the ending after rattling through the six-part thriller in next to no time at all.

Check out the official trailer here:

Now, in case you've yet to get through all six episodes and without giving away any major spoilers, the whodunnit series follows a very affluent family based in Nantucket, near Cape Cod.

However, everything takes a turn for a worse when a body is discovered just a matter of hours before a lavish wedding ceremony leading everyone at the party to become a suspect.

There's already been a slight uncertainty over the show's decision to include an 'unhinged' synchronised dance sequence to Meghan Trainor's 'Criminals' but the latest confusion is all about the ending.

Namely, that people reckon it needs a whole lot more explaining given its 'rushed' nature.

Now, The Perfect Couple is actually based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand, but it seems like there's some pretty big differences between the endings of the book and series adaptation which are clearly too hard to ignore.

One X user hit out: "I just finished The Perfect Couple on Netflix and I fear now I have to read the book bc the ending was so abrupt."

"I did not like ending of The Perfect Couple," declared a second, while a third agreed: "They needed to explain some s**t."

A fourth lamented: "The Perfect Couple was sooo close to be amazing, whyyy did they rush the ending like that??"

Another echoed: "Just me or did the ending sucked. It wasn’t clear what happened. I had to get an explanation on line of what happened. It seemed rushed and vague."

And a final X user resolved: "The Perfect Couple on Netflix is perfectly ridiculous. Especially the ending."

If you're ready to be spoiled, this is what has gotten people upset.

So there's actually a completely different explanation to how Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy) died in the book.

In the novel, Abigail (Dakota Fanning) discovers her husband Thomas (Jack Reynor) is cheating on her with a woman named Featherleigh Dale (who isn't in the TV adaptation).

Hoping to stop anything further happening, Abigail slips a pill into Featherleigh's drink to send her to sleep, which accidentally ends up in Merritt's hand.

Later, Merritt dives into the sea to retrieve a missing ring, falls asleep under the effects of the pill, and drowns.

In the show, Abigail intentionally drugged Merritt and then holds her head underwater to drown her, with the motive being cold hard cash.

You see, Merritt was pregnant, and Abigail's husband Thomas and his brothers would need to wait until that child was 18 to get their trust fund - which was too long to wait for Abigail.

One viewer found this plot point 'a big hole in the ending', writing: "Her motive to kill Merritt and the baby was so the trust fund was paid out on Will's 18th to all the sons, including her husband.

"But is conception the trigger of the trust fund reset, or an actual birth?

"If Will's birthday was coming in a few weeks and a birth was needed, I don't see the issue."

Confused? Yep, us too.
