Gavin and Stacey co-creator James Corden has admitted to 'trying to justify' a plot hole concerning one of the show’s most beloved characters.
The iconic BBC comedy has bowed out after 17 years with what is the last-ever episode in the history of the show - and what an emotional rollercoaster it was.
Aired on Christmas Day, the festive special picked up after the events of the 2019 special, with Nessa (played by co-creator Ruth Jones) getting down on one knee to pop the question to Smithy (Corden), aka her on-again, off-again lover and baby daddy.

Viewers got the shock of their lives, however, when it was revealed Smithy was instead preparing to marry his girlfriend Sonia (Laura Aikman), much to the distain of the Essex and Barry gang.
Ahead of Gavin and Stacey making the air on 25 December, Corden and Jones appeared on Capital Breakfast with Jordan North and Chris Stark.
Quizzed by North, Corden was forced to explain what is really going on with Uncle Bryn, portrayed by Rob Brydon.

In the show, Bryn always enters Gwen’s house through the back door, though North pointed out that there’s a much easier and more logical way for him to get in given that he lives right across from her.
"You are not missing anything. You are completely right,” Corden told the host about the plot hole. "It really makes sense for him to just have a key and go through the front door."
"Now we have tried to justify this many times by saying things like, ‘Bryn doesn’t want to put anyone out’,” he added.
"To get round the back of Gwen’s, Bryn has to go across the road, past Gwen’s, take the first left, go down the alley, back in through the gate, basically then unlocking the gate and the back door.

"I don’t know why we’ve done this."
Corden also shared that Bryn’s entrance in the final episode holds a special significance for him and Jones, with the duo describing it as one of their favourite moments not just from the special, but the entire series.
"In the special tonight, Bryn has perhaps our favourite Bryn entrance through the back door that we’ve ever written in,” to which Jones replied "Yeah," with a smile.

"I’ll say, our favourite scene we’ve ever written in the history of the show.”
