Gavin and Stacey fans have one request after realising why Neil The Baby sings in the final episode

Gavin and Stacey fans have one request after realising why Neil The Baby sings in the final episode

Aspiring musician Oscar Hartland reprised his role as Neil 'the Baby' for this year's final, 16 years following his on-screen debut

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the finale of Gavin and Stacey

Following an unexpected musical performance by Neil 'the Baby' during Gavin and Stacey's grand finale this Christmas Day, many fans of the BBC sitcom have been issuing the same heartfelt plea.

Oscar Hartland has played the role of Nessa and Smithy's son Neil 'the Baby' since his 'birth' in 2007.

Despite claiming to have loathed one another since their eyes first met in Leicester Square two years prior, the James Corden and Ruth Jones twosome were ceaselessly unable to stay away from each other - especially when a few drinks were thrown into the mix.

And after nine months after accidentally winding up in bed together following a night on the ale at Pam and Mick's, they welcomed their beautiful little boy, naming him Neil, after Nessa's dad - which also happens to be Smithy's real moniker.

Throughout the third series that followed, we saw Neil 'the Baby' - as he was commonly referred to by his family - as an infant, famously playing on Barry beach with his dad, and being carried around on his mum's back as she worked in the local arcade.

Hartland also reprised the baby-faced role in 2019 for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, with the youngster having since turned 11.

Remember, the episode where Nessa realised her true feelings for Smithy and proposed to him on Christmas Day?

Well, another five years later, and this Christmas, we finally caught up with the entire cast for a final time, learning that Gavin had actually interrupted Nessa's proposal that day, and that Smithy since gotten engaged to insufferable girlfriend Sonia instead.

Despite the circumstances, the Wales and Essex gang put on a brave face and attempted to help with wedding arrangements - including a now 16-year-old Neil 'the Baby', who performed a song during the doomed nuptials.

In a tear-jerking tribute to his father, actor Hartland played the guitar before the congregation, singing an emotional rendition of The Beatles' 'Blackbird'.

It turns out, however, that the inclusion of Neil 'the Baby's' song wasn't just an emotional coincidence, but a conscious choice, being that the star actually appeared on hit TV singing competition The Voice Kids last year.

And as we say - as well as leaving fans in tears - Hartland's performance has garnered so much praise from viewers that many have been inundated producers with one specific request - to have his rendition of the hit released officially.

In the comments of a snap the aspiring musician shared on Instagram - which contained his official finale script - one of his social media followers begged: "We need 'blackbird' on Spotify like immediately."

Another implored: "Please release your cover of Blackbird. I was in floods of tears as soon as you started to sing. Haven’t stopped crying since."

"Your singing was outstanding in the special!" a third wrote. "Hope you get lots of opportunities as your voice is amazing."

And a fourth went on to gush: "Wow! Your version of Blackbird on Gavin & Stacey tonight was absolutely amazing"

"I was in tears listening to you sing," another confessed. "You have a wonderful career ahead of you. Thank you Ruth and James for showcasing your talent."

Another viewer added: "Well done Oscar - Amazing musician, we all wanted to see how the Neil the baby turned out but wow!!"
