40 baby names for boys and girls are set to go extinct next year and the list of the likely candidates to be shuffled off has been put together.

Over the many, many years that humans have walked the planet people have gone by plenty of names, many of which have fallen by the wayside and never been picked up again.

Going extinct doesn't mean that nobody will ever be called one of these names again, but it does mean that in 2023 it's expected that no more than three newborn babies will be born across the UK with these names.

With some of the names it's pretty easy to believe that nobody will be called that next year, but then you see a name like Greg and wonder what's happening with the world that nobody calls their kids Greg anymore.

According to research from Pregnacare by Vitabiotics, a whole host of names for boys and girls are on the cusp of no longer getting picked, and there are some surprising ones in there.

For boys you can expect to wave goodbye to newborn babies called these names:

  • Alexandro
  • Billie
  • Brad
  • Braydan
  • Brent
  • Chandler (I guess Friends references aren't as popular these days)
  • Darnell
  • Drake
  • Edmond
  • Elbert (it's a wonder this one hasn't gone already)
  • Elija
  • Finch
  • Finneas
  • Fitzgerald
  • Frazier
  • Greg (really, no more Gregs? That's criminal)
  • Harrie
  • Izac
  • Jamiel
  • Kegan
  • Kennie
  • Kristopher
  • Lamar
  • Larenzo
  • Neville (Harry Potter fans, your duty is to keep this one going)
  • Nial
  • Philipp
  • Raymon/Ramon
  • Remie
  • Rhiley
  • Rhuben/Reuban
  • Roderick
  • Stevie
  • Stone
  • Tyreese
  • Walt
  • Wes
  • Wiley
  • Yusif
  • Zachery

Meanwhile, for the girls the names going the way of the dinosaur are:

  • Averly
  • Brydie
  • Carolyn
  • Cecile
  • Cheryl (really, nobody?)
  • Cheyanne
  • Christie
  • Collette
  • Debra
  • Delphina
  • Evaleigh
  • Flossie
  • Georgette
  • Gladys (this is another one I'm amazed is still going)
  • Hally
  • Harpreet
  • Jackie
  • Jules
  • Julianne
  • Junie
  • Justina
  • Kenzi
  • Lilliah
  • Loxley
  • Luanna
  • Meryl
  • Norina
  • Olivine
  • Paignton
  • Peggie
  • Perl
  • Pixi
  • Ryley
  • Sharlene
  • Shelly/Shelley
  • Shyanne
  • Sigrid (sounds like a good Viking name)
  • Tammy
  • Teigen
  • Tessie

Meanwhile, if you want to go for a name loads of other parents are picking then Noah is currently the most popular name for boys and Olivia is top dog when it comes to naming girls.

Those thinking of going for really unique names might want to be careful, as some parents do come to regret the names they've picked for their kids.

One of the big reasons for regret is picking an abnormal spelling of a popular name like 'Issac' or 'Chole'.
