Many of us have been enjoying munching on a lot of cheese lately – all in the name of getting into the festive spirit, of course.
From full cheeseboards with all the accoutrements to a piping hot baked camembert, there really is no greater time to lean into your love for fromage.
But one person wasn’t left feeling quite so merry when they went to chow down on their meal recently, having spotted a strange detail that has since left many people truly baffled.

They took to Reddit to share a photo of their meal – shredded potatoes topped off with a slice of melted cheese.
While the combo sounds safe enough, they were surprised to find that the cheese had odd lines running vertically along it.
“Why did my cheese get these lines when it melted?” they asked others.

When many people suggested it may have been the result of the plastic sheaths cheese slices are often packaged in, they added in a comment: “I put a slice on top of my shredded potatoes. This cheese is not individually wrapped, so no wrapper marks.
“When I ate it, the cheese was breaking cleanly along the lines. Kinda like it was laminated.”
Many others were equally confused by the uniform lines, with one joking: “Heating revealed the invisible barcode.”

Some were actively disgusted, as one wrote: “Ewwww that looked processed af.”
Another agreed: “Fake cheese don’t eat that c**p. Sold all over the US. Actually called cheese food or something like that. Disgusting.”
But if it’s not lines from plastic packaging, what is it?
While many suggested that it was clearly a ‘glitch in the matrix’, one person came forward with a ‘serious answer’ to put forward their theory.

“These slices are likely made on a conveyor belt,” they suggested.
“The lines are probably from the dispenser that secretes the cheese onto the belt before it cools to a semi solid form. Maybe this slice was towards the end of the roll, like receipt paper.”

Someone else replied: “Secreting cheese on a conveyor belt sounds disturbing."
Another said: “If it came sliced but not wrapped it could have seen been a manufacturing thing that left deviations in it, like it was pushed through rollers or something.”
