The party season may be over and Dry January in full swing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time.

In timely news, scientists have created a drink that will get you tipsy without alcohol - and you can legally buy it just in time to survive the month ahead.

Back in 2021, GABA Labs launched Sentia Spirits (also available on US Amazon), a line of non-alcoholic drinks that customers say give a ‘buzz’ (without the hangover).

Headed up by Professor David Nutt, the non-alcoholic drinks are reportedly designed to be an 'effective alternative to drinking low levels of alcohol'. In order to replicate the real deal, the drinks essentially trick the brain’s internal chemistry into thinking it’s tipsy. In an interview with The Independent, Professor Nutt explained: “It’s a drink that is based on the science of alcohol, particularly the low doses of alcohol that relax you and make you more sociable.”

The brand is currently offering three different spirits online: Sentia Red, Sentia Black, and Sentia Gold. You can find out what each beverage is designed for below, according to the website (and it's also available for US shoppers via Amazon).

  • GABA Black: to boost productivity or jumpstart evening plans
  • GABA Red: to chill out and unwind
  • GABA Gold: to bring warmth and wellness to social gatherings

The drinks seem to do the trick too with hundreds of rave reviews on Amazon. “I bought these drinks to reduce my alcohol intake but still wanted the relaxed feeling," one five-star review reads. "Well, it works! Fantastic!”

Another satisfied shopper added, “Definitely got a buzz, felt smiley and chilled almost immediately and stayed that way for quite a while. Felt fine the next morning too.”

A third said, “A gentle buzz and a nice new addition to the drinks cabinet.”

So, how does it work?

According to Professor Nutt, the drinks in question are what are known as GABA spirits. GABA, formally referred to as gamma-aminobutyric acid, is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.

Sentia drinks essentially activate this neurotransmitter in a similar way that a glass of wine or beer would and in turn, help you to feel relaxed. The only difference? Unlike alcohol, you won't be able to get drunk on Sentia drinks, but will reportedly feel a 'buzz'.

The non-alcoholic GABA spirits work in a similar way to CBD drinks, as these also use neurotransmitters in the brain to stimulate a relaxing effect. The only difference is that Sentia delivers a stronger impact.

Where to buy the alcohol free drinks everyone is talking about

You can now buy the alcohol- free drinks on the official Sentia website for £32 per bottle, or via Amazon US for $74.99 for a bundle). There are also packs of two currently on offer. The drinks can be mixed as you like with a recipe section available on the website if you need some inspiration, whether you fancy making a negroni or espresso martini.

January just got a whole lot easier...

Visit the Sentia website (UK) or Amazon (US) to find out more.
