When it comes to wedding anniversaries, many couples may head out for a fancy meal or just a few drinks to celebrate.

However, for the big milestone anniversaries some like to do something that little bit extra special, whether that's a few nights away in a hotel or even a nice holiday.

While this man may have done none of that, the present he gave to his wife for their 50th wedding anniversary is nothing short of heartwarming.

Lee Wilson, from Kansas, US, has been a devoted farmer for pretty much his entire life.

So, to celebrate the momentous golden wedding anniversary, Lee decided to plant a whopping 1.2 million sunflowers across an 80-acre field.

His wife Renee has always loved sunflowers, so Lee saw it as the ideal way to show how much he loves his wife on their special day.

With the help of their son, Lee sowed the seeds of the sunflowers during the whole month of May, which is truly impressive.

Not only did the father-son duo manage to plant a whopping 1.2 million sunflowers in just a month, but they also managed to completely keep it from Renee, leading to a massive surprise on the day.

"Well we're celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary August 10th and you know what's a guy get his gal for the 50th?" Lee told ABC Kake.

"And I put a lot of thought into it and she always liked sunflowers," he added, which would be something Lee is well aware of seen as the couple have been together ever since high school.

Lee presented the thoughtful gift to his wife recently ahead of their special anniversary in the coming weeks, and it's fair to say Renee was very happy.

She told ABC: "It made me feel very special. It couldn't have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers."

A video clip of Renee discovering the sunflowers has been doing the rounds on social media, with many people's hearts beaming as a result of the romantic gesture.

Since the sunflowers sprouted and Lee unveiled the gift to his wife, many visitors have flocked to the farm on Highway 54, just four miles east from the Kansas city of Pratt.

While many locals have visited, others have travelled miles to capture that perfect picture opportunity - something that will only last for two weeks due to the tight sunflower season.
