Olympic swimmer reacts after finding out huge personal news in front of the world after winning medal

Ryan Murphy's wife held up a sign while the Olympian won his bronze medal at the Paris 2024 games.

Winning an Olympic medal wasn't the only big moment that swimmer Ryan Murphy experienced whilst competing at the Paris games yesterday (July 29).

Murphy, 29, received a bronze medal for Team USA, after finishing third in the 100-meter backstroke race.

Winning this medal marks his seventh overall, making him one of the most decorated Olympic athletes of all time.

He managed to finish the race in 52.39 seconds, just behind Thomas Ceccon of Italy who won the gold medal, finishing in exactly 52 seconds.

His pregnant wife Bridget Konttinen was also spotted in amongst the crowd and Murphy has spoken about how his wife's attitude spurs him on ahead of the games in the summer.

He told People Magazine: "I think she's someone who definitely gets me just motivated about life.

"She's super optimistic, and I think that's just been really helpful for me in terms of my approach to the sport."

The pair have been dating since they were in college before getting married in September 2023.

They are now expecting their first child together - who is due in January next year.

Before competing in the Olympics, Murphy was none the wiser of what sex their baby was, but Bridget certainly made his winning moment one to remember, when she held up a sign after his race which said: "Ryan, it's a girl!"

According to Associated Press, Murphy said: "I was walking back around and Bridget was holding up a sign and it said - 'Ryan, it's a girl!'.

"That was the first time I heard the gender. We both - we honestly both thought it was going to be a boy.

"And everyone - like everyone - we were talking to, they thought it was going to be a boy."

He also noted that Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his wife Marissa Lawrence, close friends of the couple, were also expecting a little girl, adding: "I hope our daughters can be friends."

Team USA and USA Swimming's Instagram pages also posted a picture of the happy moment, writing in the caption: "Step 1: Win an Olympic medal.

Step 2: Find out you’re going to be a girl dad."

And many were quick to congratulate the happy parents-to-be in the comments.

"Double celebration!" one person wrote, while another said: "CONGRATULATIONS MOM & DAD!!! So happy for the entire family and this is one of the best gender reveals ever!!!

"What an amazing win for them all!!!"
