Sometimes dogs make noises that you’ve no idea what it means, but a dog expert is lifting the lid on one common sound that has a universal message.
As a dog owner, there are a variety of sounds that you’ll hear throughout the day.
It could be a woof, a quiet bark, a grumble or something else.

All of these noises have meanings, and if you know what they are, it’ll enable you to know how to deal with the issue.
For example, a dog whining at the back door could symbolise that they need to go outside to do their business.
Yelping means they are hurt, and grumbling signifies that they aren’t happy about something in the moment.

But what about a ‘boof’?
Now, you might not know what this is, but I can guarantee you’ve heard it before and will recognise it if your dog does it again.
This super soft bark is something that many dogs will do at some point, and it’s up to you to know whether this is something to help them with or not.
A man known as the Vermont Dog Trainer on Instagram created a video to educate dog owners on this very topic.

Specifically, he wanted to let you know whether this is something that you need to correct in their behaviour or not and what it really means.
He explained that a ‘boof’ is when your ‘dog hears something but may not be sure where it’s coming from, what it is, they may not be confident’ in addressing it and so on.
So, if your pup hears something that’s odd, they might ‘boof’ as they work through their confusion, but afterwards, when they become more confident, they might follow it up with a bark.

The expert shared: “That low sound, like a super soft bark. But do you know what it means?
“You may hear it at varying levels, maybe even much lower than the dog in the video.
“Often times if a dog makes this sound to let you know they hear something, the best thing you can do is go look out a window. This makes your dog think that you heard them, and that you are listening.”
He continued: “Depending on where you live, that will depend on what you want from your dog. Whether it’s the city, urban areas, rural areas, and deep in the woods will determine what you want from your dog. When was the last time you heard your dog ‘boof?’”
Now that dog owners had the answer, they were quick to talk about their pup’s and their little ‘boofs’ on social media.

The expert went on to explain that your dog might ‘boof’ at first, but then build up their volume as they get worked up.
However, other dogs might do the opposite and if they bark to begin with, and then end it with a couple of ‘boofs’, there’s no need to tell them off, as they are already trying to calm themselves down.
It’s a really cute fact, and I’m pretty glad I know how to identify the tiny bark now.
One person wrote: “Hands down the best dog sound.”
Another commented: “Hehehehee dogs are so precious and cute and perfect big gigantic emphasis on the PERFECT!!!!”
