Relationship expert shares the ‘perfect’ age gap for couples

It turns out there's a sweet spot when it comes to age gap relationships, and it will probably surprise you

Age gap relationships have always existed, as have people's opinions on them.

Some people believe that as long everybody is of legal age and consenting, it's no one else's place to get involved.

Other's think there's other factors to consider, including intelligence, power dynamics and the actual amount of years between both parties.

Nevertheless, they're still a huge part of the dating landscape, with a number of A-listers famously embarking on age gap love.

Notable age-gappers of recent times include Billie Eilish, 22, and her recent ex, Jesse Rutherford, 32.

There's also the likes of Peter Andre, 51, and his wife Emily, 34, as well as Kris Jenner, 68, and Corey Gamble, 43.

Now, an expert has weighed in on what the sweet spot is for age gap relationships.

A study that was carried out by Emory University in Atlanta claims to have discovered found the best possible age gap - as well as those most likely to end in heartbreak.

The study stated that couples that have more than two decades between them have a 95 percent chance of separating - which is obviously huge.

It also found that couples with a ten-year age gap have a 39 percent chance of splitting up, and those with a five-year age gap have an 18 percent chance of calling it quits.

As for what the ideal age gap is - it's probably not what you expected.

It turns out it's just one year.

The study, which assessed 3,000 couples, found that couples with only 12 months between them face a nominal three percent chance of going their separate ways.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules but the research provided some interesting results nonetheless.

Relationship expert Samantha Jayne told news.com.au: "Dating someone closer to your age does make it easier when it comes to common ground. You tend to ‘get’ each other if you grew up in the same generation.

"You know the same music, TV shows, fashion, political/global issues. It comes down to birds of a feather flock together."

She went on to add: "All circumstances are different, and it does come down to an individual. Ultimately the studies have found that a gap of one to three years has the greatest level of happiness and satisfaction.

“Often with larger age gaps there tends to be a power struggle. Sometimes the older one is more like a parent and the younger one is more in a follow position with less of a voice.

“In some cases, some cultures frown upon large age gaps especially with women being older so this can be very challenging.”

It might be time to tighten that age criteria on Tinder.
