It's the moment in life all dog owners have dreaded... the day you finally say goodbye to your faithful friend.

And people have been left even more distraught after finding out why we shouldn't ever let them die alone.

A woman called Syd recently shared a video to TikTok, warning dog owners not to let them die alone.

As obvious as this sounds, sometimes owners find the process of letting their dogs go too gut-wrenching to stay for.

But Syd has pleaded with pet owners to stay with their furry friends as they take their last breath after finding out exactly what happens in the moment - which ‘blew’ her mind.

In the video, she said: "This is a PSA to any pet owners. I’m going to try and say this without f**king crying... I’ve already cried today."

Citing an article she recently read, Syd explained: "The veterinarians were talking about something you may not know as a pet owner... when you put down your pet, you can choose whether or not you want to stay with them or sit in the waiting room."

She said that the vet explained how staying in the room can make them feel less anxious about what they’re going to face.

The most heartbreaking revelation of all, is that dogs look for their owners in the final moments.

She said: “Basically if you can stand it, stay in the room because they are looking for you in their last moments.”

Despite never losing a pet herself, Syd said the experience is just like losing a relative or close one.

"It’s the exact same thing, it’s like their little version of hospice I guess but at least that’s how I kind of look at it," she said.

"If you can stand it, stay in the room with them."

The video has now been viewed over 430,000 times, with owners sharing their heart-wrenching dog stories.

One wrote: "My vet had told me when they put him to sleep it will be quick and he won’t even know what is happening.

"Right after they gave him the shot he looked up at me and howled until he passed. I’ll never forget that sound.”

Another said: “When my baby was dying, she had no energy at all and didn’t move but right before she died she wagged her tail and raised her head towards me.”

And a third said: “I stayed with my senior rescue dog Ziggy when he was put down and it was the most traumatic thing ever. I thought it would be peaceful - it was not.”

My heart is officially broken.
