Doctor reveals the ‘one worst thing’ you can do for your brain health

Neuroscientist and psychologist Dr Sabina Brennan shared her expertise on the subject

A doctor has revealed the one thing most of us do that's 'so silly' and really bad for our brain health.

Being healthy isn't only to do with eating your 5 a day and getting your exercise in - it's also about looking after your mind and mental health.

So, to share their expert advice, one doctor has come forward to reveal the 'one worst thing' you can do for your overall brain health.

Speaking to fellow doctor, Alex George, neuroscientist and psychologist Dr Sabina Brennan was asked: "What's one thing that we do quite commonly in today's society that's bad for our brain health?"

"Just one thing?" she joked before highlighting the importance of two main things that can severely impact our brain health - and it's maybe not what you'd expect.

She explained: "Managing stress poorly and not getting enough sleep.

"Most of us deprive ourselves of sleep to do something stupid, like watch another episode of a Netflix series."

While admitting that even she does it herself, Dr Sabina warned: "It's so silly because it really knocks the impact it has on your cognitive ability the next day, as well as your mood and how you feel physically."

She added: "It's really stupid, but you know, hey, that's part of being human."

It sure is.

Talking of the importance of snoozing, one doctor has made a pretty X-rated suggestion for how to get a better night's sleep.

Dr Terry Simpson, a surgeon in California, shared a series of sleeping tips on TikTok - but the last is one step above the 'military' or Scandi sleep method.

According to the doc, a good old orgasm is the best way to drift off to sleep.

He said: "Having an orgasm actually relaxes you, makes you feel better and just allows you to have that wonderful sleep."

"You are not going to sleep if you are sexually frustrated," Dr Simpson explained.

"You’re just not. Having an orgasm actually relaxes you, makes you feel better and just allows you to have that wonderful sleep."

It would seem he's right as a 2023 Healio survey found that 75 percent of adults with insomnia slept better after a nighttime sex session.

Dr Douglas Kirsch, lead study author and medical director of sleep medicine at Atrium Health said at the time of its release, as per the New York Post: "Little scientific data exists around the impact of sex and orgasm on sleep quality.

"While this data is quite preliminary, it was interesting how often sex was used to aid in sleep."

Dr Simpson added: "Let me tell you — you need to either have a very willing partner or you just need to take matters into your own hand.

"Because, remember, sleep’s important. If you sleep better, you’ll feel better, you’ll wake up better."
