Disney World forced to remove iconic character after 50 years over ‘concerns’ about his name

The character has been axed over concerns its presence was 'offensive and derogatory'

Disney World has been forced to remove one of its famous characters after 50 years over 'concerns' about his name.

The theme park made the decision to scrap the character altogether despite it being a staple of the Magic Kingdom park in Florida for decades now.

The character who was part of the ride, which opened way back when in 1971, has previously been considered one of the most popular of the 18 animatronics on it.

The ride in question, the Country Bear Jamboree, held its final showing back in January of this year before it was shut for renovations.

It was then reopened yesterday (17 July) but fans were quick to notice that the likes of one particular character had been given a brand-new name altogether.

While the character was 'likely created without malicious intent', Disney says, its name 'carries negative connotations'.

The decision to remove the character and replace him with another has since been described as a 'step towards creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for all guests'.

In the updated show, the animatronic previously referred to as Liver Lips McGrowl had been renamed Romeo McGrowl, and also sported a new blonde hair-do.

It's reported that the name change is part of a larger refurbishment of the show.

A statement published to the Disney blog, Inside The Magic, reads: "The Country Bear Jamboree, a beloved institution at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom since 1971, underwent a significant transformation in January 2024.

"The closure and subsequent refurbishment of the attraction marked a pivotal moment in its history, leading to the removal of several elements, most notably the character Liver Lips McGrowl."

It continued: "The decision to remove Liver Lips McGrowl was driven by concerns over the character’s name."

According to Disney, the term 'liver lips' is considered 'derogatory and offensive', as it is associated with 'excessive alcohol consumption and the resulting liver damage'.

"The phrase is deemed to be insensitive and outdated, prompting Disney’s decision to modify the character," the statement continued.

Disney has also since shared a statement on the matter, writing: "In the revamped Country Bear Jamboree, Liver Lips McGrowl has been replaced by a new character named Romeo McGrowl.

"While the character’s appearance remains largely unchanged, the name alteration reflects Disney’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for its guests."

They continued: "The removal of Liver Lips McGrowl from the Country Bear Jamboree is emblematic of a broader trend within Disney Parks: a commitment to addressing and rectifying outdated or culturally insensitive elements within its attractions.

"This evolution is driven by a desire to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all guests."

The company finished: "Disney has undertaken similar initiatives in recent years, with notable examples including the reimagining of Splash Mountain and the Jungle Cruise. These attractions underwent significant modifications to remove stereotypical and offensive portrayals of indigenous peoples and animals.

"The changes reflect Disney’s growing awareness of the need to adapt its offerings to align with contemporary values and expectations."
