Team GB disqualified from event before race even started after awkward mistake

A pair of Team GB Olympians were sadly disqualified from their sporting event before the race even started after an extremely painful mistake.

Scotland's Anna Burnet and her English partner, John Gimson, were totally 'devastated' after realising their blunder which cost them a medal.

As the athletes, who were triumphant silver medallists in the last Tokyo Games, geared up to battle it out during the mixed multihull sailing event, they made a fatal error which cost them the race entirely.

Anna and John were in third place as they entered the double-points medal race, however, judges found that they crossed the line before the starting horn sounded.

Ultimately, this forced the pair to retire from the race while their opponents continued forging on.

Due to the mistake, the Team GB stars were capped at a maximum of just 22 points which resulted in them being bumped down to fourth in the overall standings.

Italy's Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti won gold while Argentina's Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco received the silver medal and Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson took bronze home for New Zealand.

Speaking to the BBC about that excruciating moment, Anna recalled: "In that moment, it's devastating.

"It's a bad dream, but we can be proud of what we have done.

"There's no-one I'd rather be here with. We're so lucky we get to do this together. The highs and lows, we are riding it together."

She added: "There is life and there is sport and, in this moment, I suppose life and sport are feeling a bit separate to us.

"The sport has been brutal, but life goes on. We will get married and life will be great."

Talking of unfortunate scores, Team USA diver Alison Gibson was gutted following her disappointing performance and has since opened up about the 'pain' she experienced after scoring a flat zero for her dive.

It all went south during the preliminary round of the Olympic women's 3m springboard which she subsequently finished last out of the 28 competitors.

In her first dive, the 25-year-old Texas native's feet slammed into the springboard when she was in a tucked position amid a somersault prompting the audience to let out a gasp in shock at the painful blunder.

The collision meant that Alison lost her previous form as she plummeted into the water.

The American then had to watch on in agony as judges awarded her a 0.0 for the dive.

Alison has since discussed the moment and explained how it won't stop her from doing what she loves.

"I hit my heels and my feet on the board. I have cuts along the sides. And then I bruised my right heel pretty good, but I was determined to keep going," the diver told Reuters.

"I definitely was in pain," Alison continued. "But one thing that I say is I hope that anyone who is watching just was able to see what it looks like to get up and keep going even when things don't go the way you want them to.

"It's about the fight."
