Olympics viewers are left disappointed over flame ‘going out’ at closing ceremony

Paris is celebrating the end of the Olympics with the traditional Closing Ceremony

Viewers have been left disappointed over the Olympic flame 'going out' shortly into the closing ceremony.

The Paris Olympics - which started on 26 July - has now come to an end, with the French capital now celebrating the games with its traditional closing ceremony.

But fans were left confused when the flame was put out 'too early' into the evening.

The Olympic flame is a key part of the games and according to The Olympic Museum, is 'a manifestation of the positive values that Man has always associated with the symbolism of fire'.

At this year's games, the Olympic flame was carried away by Team France swimmer Leon Marchand, but people were alarmed to see it go so soon.

One wrote: "The most underwhelming Olympic flame there's ever been IMO. Missed seeing it in the stadium."

While another said: "I thought the flame stayed lit until near the end of the Closing Ceremony."

And a third added: "That's a really underwhelming extinguishing of the flame and too early in the ceremony. Should have had it fly one more time."

Others were confused when they tuned in to see that the flame had already been put out, with another adding: "The flame is out already?!? That was quick!"

And another said: "I wasn’t ready for the Olympic flame to be extinguished this early during the closing ceremony."

While a third wrote: "Oh. Is the Olympics Vasque out already? Paris not hanging about extinguishing the flame."

The Olympic Games will next be hosted in Los Angeles in 2028.

But before the hosting duties are handed over to the USA, celebrities and sports personalities have been congratulating the athletes for their achievements.

In the UK, the Prince and Princess of Wales took to Instagram to share a reel filled with messages from various famous faces, including David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, Rebecca Adlington, Clare Balding and Emma Willis.

"Well done @teamgb, what an incredible journey!" The caption read.

"Every athlete showed immense dedication, heart and passion. You made us all so proud!

"Here’s to celebrating every triumph at @paris2024 and looking forward to more from @paralympicsgb_official later in the summer."

In the clip, Kate said: "From all of us watching at home, congratulations to Team GB."

William added: "Well done to all you've achieved, you've been an inspiration to us all."
