Donald Trump promises to release classified documents days after he’s sworn in as president

Donald Trump promises to release classified documents days after he’s sworn in as president

Today (20 January) Donald Trump will become the 47th president of the US

Donald Trump is set to reveal highly-anticipated and protected documents in 'the coming days' after his inauguration today (20 January).

Trump's inauguration ceremony is due to take place today, making him the 47th president of the United States - and also the first convicted felon to serve as president in the US.

There are a number of things he has vowed to change as soon as he takes office, including the resurrection of TikTok for Americans - which we're sure they are pleased about.

But he has also pledged to release a certain number of classified documents for public consumption, in the days after he is sworn in.

The documents in question have been previously protected for national security reasons, but Trump has gone against warnings from the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On Sunday (19 January), Trump announced that he would release classified documents related to the assassinations of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

However, he made similar promises for his 2017-2021 term, and while some were released, most were held back.

At his rally in downtown Washington before becoming president for the second time, Trump said: "As the first step toward restoring transparency and accountability to government, we will also reverse the over-classification of government documents.

"In the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other topics of great public interest."

He wasn't specific about which documents were due to be revealed, after decades of fascination and speculation - particularly surrounding JFK.

His death has been attributed to a sole gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, who allegedly shot the 35th president in 1963.

However, conspiracies have formed all over the world - offering different explanations to his cause of death.

Trump's health and human services secretary-designate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of Robert Kennedy and nephew of JFK, has claimed he believes the CIA was involved in his uncle's death.

“There is overwhelming evidence that the CIA was involved in his murder,” Kennedy said in an interview with John Catsimatidis on New York City radio station 77 WABC. “I think it’s beyond a reasonable doubt at this point.”

Others believe that there were multiple gunmen at the scene in Texas.

Kennedy was the youngest ever man to be elected as president, but he was also the youngest to die.
