It looks like Donald Trump is keen to get stuck into the World Cup action, as the US President has reportedly been given permission to do something that’s usually only reserved for players.

The international football tournament, which occurs every four years, is being hosted by the US, alongside Canada and Mexico, from 11 June to 19 July.

With the games taking place in stadiums throughout these countries, it means that those of us in the UK and around the world are having to get up at some seriously early times to watch the action.

Speaking to FIFA, Trump said it was an honour for the US to host the tournaments and that he intended to attend the matches.

The world leader said, "I would like to go to, certainly, more than one. We’ll be making the rounds; it’s a period of a month, and it’s really top-of-the-line. It’s one of the great events of anywhere in the world.”

And now, it looks like he could be doing more than just attending the games, as TalkSPORT has reported that FIFA has ‘no objection to Trump breaking presentation protocol and handing the World Cup trophy directly to the winning captain’.

The governing body also reportedly said that they have no issue with the President being in the thick of the celebrations and helping to lift the trophy, as he did during the Club World Cup final last year.

The publication reports that Trump has been told FIFA wants him to be the one to hand over the trophy to the World Cup champions, while Mexican and Canadian officials are also invited to appear at the closing ceremony.

Football fans will remember the eyebrow-raising Club World Cup moment last year, where Trump unexpectedly gatecrashed Chelsea FC’s trophy-lift celebration.

After the English team’s victory against Paris Saint-Germain FC in July, the US President handed them the trophy and stuck around to lift it up with them.

This meant he was in almost all of the pictures and videos of Chelsea’s moment, despite not being part of the team himself.

As for the World Cup final, New York’s New Jersey Stadium has been confirmed as the location, with the game due to take place on Sunday, 19 July.

Reacting to the new reports, X users wrote: “Do FIFA president fear this man or what?” and “So wrong keep politics out of FOOTBALL!”

Others chimed in with: “Of course, Trump would make the World Cup about himself” and “That would certainly create one of the most talked-about trophy lift photos in World Cup history.”

Tyla has contatced the White House and FIFA for comment.
