Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo issues support as Julianne Moore’s kids’ book is ‘banned’ by Trump nearly 20 years after being released

A number of celebrities have spoken out over Trump's 'absurd' decision

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo has issued a statement of support as Julianne Moore’s children's book has now been 'banned' by Donald Trump nearly 20 years after being released.

Back in 2007, Academy Award-winning actress Moore released the book, titled Freckleface Strawberry, which has now been added to a list of library books suspended for a 'compliance review' after a presidential executive order.

The decision comes after the Department of Defence Education Activity sent parents a memo last week, declaring library books in schools across America would be examined for content 'potentially related to gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology topics'.

As per the Guardian, among the handful of books that were 'relocated to the professional collection for evaluation with access limited to professional staff' to undergo a 'compliance review' was Freckleface Strawberry.

Moore took to Instagram on Monday (17 February) to share her reactions to the news, saying it was a 'great shock' to learn that one of her books had been 'banned by the Trump Administration' from schools serving the children of US military personnel and civilian defence employees.

She explained in the post: "It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense."

Moore went on to discuss the subject matter of the text, explaining its a semi-autobiographical story about a seven-year-old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them when she realises that she is different 'just like everybody else'.

"It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community," she continued.

Moore went on to admit she's 'particularly stunned' by the fact that Trump has enacted his order onto someone who once studied at Frankfurt American High School, a Department of Defence school that once operated in Germany.

She referenced her own upbringing: "I grew up with a father who is a Vietnam veteran and spent his career in the #USArmy. I could not be prouder of him and his service to our country.

"It is galling for me to realize that kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a @dodea_edu school will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own."

The Boogie Nights A-lister concluded: "And I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that cause it to be banned by the US Government.

"I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right."

Many fellow celebs have since rushed in to share their support for Moore as well as outrage at the Trump administration for banning the book.

Pompeo penned: "I'd say what a bunch of donkeys except I love donkeys soooo once again... don't even know what to say."

Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba offered: "Just bought it for my daughter. Can’t wait to read it."

"Are you joking?? How can we get this book?" Scarface actress Michelle Pfeiffer asked.

Kick-Ass star Chloë Grace Moretz chimed in: "Wow, truly shocked about this??? Literally why??"

"Oh my friend this is frightening! I’m so sorry this is happening!!" commiserated Halle Berry, while Julianne Hough added: "This is absurd."

And 13 Going on 30 actor Mark Ruffalo commented: "MAGAmerica’s rank hypocrisy and degeneracy made crystal clear here. But we know it’s not about the contents of the book and everything about who wrote it…a strong female democrat leaning citizen who has been a champion for women’s rights.

"Is this what they mean by punishment and retribution? Start banning books, and movies and art? Last I looked the price of eggs and rent and homes and everything else Trump promised to bring down have only increased.

"But they made sure to ban your book. What a waste of time and energy and decency."
