People have come up with a theory about why Melania Trump chose to wear a wide-brimmed hat at her husband's inauguration this week.

On Monday (20 January) Donald Trump, 78, was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

At the inauguration, Trump was joined by Melania, as well as his children, Ivanka, Donald Jr., Eric, Tiffany and Barron.

Since the inauguration, there's been a lot of chatter about Melania's wardrobe, specifically her wide-brimmed hat, which covered the top half of her face.

While some people have suggested that the 54-year-old chose the accessory on purpose after *that* viral moment which saw Trump try to kiss his wife on the cheek, only to be blocked by the hat, others have compared it to one of Beyoncé's iconic looks.

The hit track appeared on the singer's 2016 Lemonade album with the accompanying music video showing Bey rocking a similar wide-brim black hat which also covered a significant amount of her face.

After making the comparison, one fan dubbed Melania as being in 'her Lemonade era'.

Another theory has also emerged, with some people claiming Melania could have worn the hat to shield her facial expressions.

The First Lady is often subject to viral memes - found mainly on the likes of X and TikTok - based on her facial expressions at previous events.

One person wrote on X: "Melania's elegant, occlusive, all-business, mafia boss hat said no one—but especially not the media or their cameras —will have access to her unless she grants it, not even to her facial expressions."

While another said: "Melania clearly wore that hat so the world couldn't see her roll her eyes once more."

And a third added: "Melania wearing a hat pulled low today is to cover her eyes from photographers. Last inauguration her expressions became memes."

Melania has recently opened up about her living arrangements during Trump's second term as president.

She told Fox: "I will be in the White House, and when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach.

"But my first priority is to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife. And once we are in on January 20, you serve the country."

Reflecting on the First Lady role, she added: "Maybe some people, they see me as just a wife of the president, but I'm standing on my own two feet, independent. I have my own thoughts.

"I have my own yes and no. I don't always agree with what my husband is saying or doing. And that's OK."

Tyla has reached out to Melania's reps for comment.
