Why Royal Family carry one morbid piece of clothing wherever they travel

Why Royal Family carry one morbid piece of clothing wherever they travel

The late Queen Elizabeth II famously once didn't follow the rule and it had disastrous consequences

The Royal Family are expected to carry a specific outfit with them at all times to wear in extreme cases.

There are many rules that the Royal Family have to follow that just make no sense to any of us - no matter how hard we try.

But this rule isn't one of the weirder ones and it actually makes a lot of sense.

The royals are known for their stylish, timeless looks, but there's one outfit that they always have to carry with them just incase of an emergency.

Royal women in particular garner more attention than men in terms of style choices, given the fact anything that Kate Middleton wears seems to sell out in a matter of hours.

But despite the royals all carrying a similar outfit with them while away, it's one they never want to have to put on.

Royal protocol dictates that members of the Royal Family are required to take a black outfit with them when going on a royal tour in the unfortunate circumstances that someone passes away.

One of the most recent times where the royals were required to action the outfit, was in 1992 when Princess Diana's father died.

Lord Spencer passed away while she was on a skiing holiday with the then-Prince Charles.

The pair quickly returned to the UK, and were photographed wearing only black attire.

The reason behind the colour choice is to do with mourning, and is seen as a mark of respect.

The late Queen was also caught off guard in 1952 when her own father, King George VI, died in 1952.

At the time, she was on a safari with Prince Philip, and hadn't packed her black attire.

The then-Princess, just 25, had to wait for a suitable outfit to be brought to her before she could be photographed in public.

The death of the Queen in September 2022 saw a number of royal protocols come to fruition, as King Charles declared a national period of mourning.

It lasted until seven days after her funeral, which took place on 19 September, 11 days after she passed away at Balmoral Castle.

Mourning is observed by the whole family, while Royal Household staff and Representatives of the Royal Household are on official duties, and troops are committed to Ceremonial Duties.
