Royal fans have been left utterly divided over one particular detail in a rare 'casual' photo of Prince William and and his wife, Kate Middleton, with their three children.

Over the weekend (14 June), the Prince and Princess of Wales took to social media to share with the public a family snap of them celebrating the Trooping the Colour for King Charles III's birthday parade featuring Prince George, Princess Charlotte and little Prince Louis.

"Another brilliant day at Trooping the Colour for His Majesty's Birthday Parade. Thank you to everybody who came, and to all those who took part," the royal couple penned in the Instagram caption along the photo.

Now, amidst the flurry of people fiercely debating online as to whether the snap in question - which saw all five family members quite formally suited and booted - was 'casual' or not, many others couldn't help but put their two cents in on William's facial hair.

Some totally loved the more rugged look with one Facebook user gushing: "The beard looks good, suits him!"

"Think it suits him," penned a second while a third chimed in: "I love William's beard!!"

Others, however, weren't so sure as a fourth quipped: "I liked it better without it."

"Lovely photo but William's beard is questionable," declared a fifth while a sixth quite rudely slammed: "William looking older than his years with the beard!"

Another jabbed: "I saw this on the news just now and said ewww I'm not a fan of the beard look. Beautiful family pic though!"

And a final Facebook user echoed: "William you need a shave but a lovely photo."

Fans first came face-to-face with a beardy-looking William last summer in August, when he and wife Kate Middleton recorded a home-video and posted it to Instagram.

In the clip, the Prince of Wales could be seen joining a reel filled with famous faces - including David Beckham, Snoop Dogg and Emma Willis - congratulating the athletes who competed at the 2024 Olympic Games.

"Well done @teamgb, what an incredible journey!" the caption read.

But it wasn't the royal couple's sweet message that attracted mass attention from viewers, instead it was William's new look, after the future king could be seen rocking the beginnings of a beard.

In fact, the beardy debut sparked such a huge response that fans have even coined the phenomenon as 'The Prince William' effect!
