Whether it’s a pint of Guinness at a pub in Dublin or a bottle of wine in some swanky Parisian restaurant, drinks prices in some of Europe’s busier cities aren’t exactly renowned for being cheap.

Sometimes you can shave off a few quid here or there if you swerve the tourist spots and make a beeline for places off the beaten track, but even then you might not even realise how much you’re paying until you’re hit with the receipt.
A group of friends found out the hard way when they went out for a drink in a square in Venice.
They ended up having to fork out a whopping €70 for just four drinks – a price tag that left them floored, especially because one of the bevs was just a glass of Coke.

TikToker David Senda posted a video about their pricey round, joking in the caption, loosely translated into English: “We dismantle the myth that in Venice they nail you in St. Mark's Square when you sit on a terrace.”
In total, the group ordered a Guinness, two beers and a Coca-Cola, having also enjoyed what looked like some complementary snacks.
The person filming can be heard saying: “I’ll take the beer mat to remember this by."

The Coke along cost a staggering €16, while the Guinness cost €18 - as did each of the San Marco beers.
Hey, at least those crisps and olives were on the house...
St Mark's Square is notorious for its pricey cafes, bars and restaurants, thanks to its proximity to the world-famous basilica of the same name.

But fellow TikTokers were equally stunned by the bill, with one commenting: "€16 for a coke? When I see them in the supermarket I promise I won't complain about the price.
Others shared their own horror stories from Venice, including one person who said they were once charged ‘€5 for the table and €5 for the cutlery’ - even though they were eating pizza and hadn’t actually asked for a fork.
