While you might be familiar with the concept of double cleansing your face to ensure that all traces of makeup, SPF and dirt are removed at the end of a long day, have you heard of double shampooing? Well, as the name might suggest, it’s the process of shampooing your hair twice and it’s currently trending on TikTok, with over two million views on the social media platform.

But is it really necessary? And how does it work?

Step forward Sam McKnight MBE, who has his own haircare line and celebrity clients such Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Cate Blanchett, who breaks down the trend...

The trend involves shampooing hair twice each time you shower or bathe.

How does it work?

“Double-shampooing is a great way to ensure your hair is fully clean and refreshed and is especially important if you've used styling products, haven't washed your hair for more than three days, or spend time in a high-pollution environment,” Sam explains. “The first cleanse removes product and sebum build-up, while the second will ensure your scalp can reap the benefits of the cleanser formulation.”

This means that if you have a defrizzing, hydrating or volumising shampoo, your hair will be able to benefit from these treatments after you hair has been cleansed fully by the first wash.

It is said to have a number of benefits for the hair and scalp.

Sam recommends a lightweight shampoo for the first cleanse, such as his Light Cleanse Shampoo, with you following this up with a shampoo designed for your specific hair type or issue for the second wash.

Something like his Rich Nourish Shampoo for deep hydration and frizz protection or the Cool Girl Volume Cleanse to strengthen and add volume to the hair.

And while you’re shopping, “it is also important to look out for cleansers/shampoos that are sulfate and paraben free, to avoid extra moisture being stripped from your hair and scalp,” he explains.

Despite the fact that all hair types can benefit from double shampooing, it may be particularly helpful for those who struggle with greasy and oily roots, as well as those who don’t wash their hair on a daily basis.

You can use the same shampoo twice or two different shampoos, according to the experts.

What are people saying after trying it out?

Several people took to TikTok to share their thoughts on the current haircare trend.

One admitted: “I have super oily hair but since I've started to double shampoo, my hair is much cleaner during the week and I wash it only once a week.”

While another explained: “I've been double shampooing for over a year, and it has changed the game for me.” And a third added: “Double shampoo changed the game for me. My hair gets less greasy now.”

Will you be trying it out? Or do you already double shampoo without even thinking about it?

Sam’s Hair by Sam McKnight range of shampoos, conditioners and styling products are available from Sephora UK, Space NK, Cult Beauty and the brand’s official website.
