Ricky Gervais has finally revealed the meaning behind the emotional final scene in the last ever season of After Life.
Watch the scene below:
The comedy-drama series left fans in tears, with some fans were left wondering if Tony (played by Gervais) dies in the final scene.
In the final scene, Tony and his dog Brandy walk away from Tambury fair. Tony’s late wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) appears, and after the couple hold hands for a few seconds, Lisa fades away, followed by Brandy and eventually Tony.
Fans took to Twitter to speculate on whether this meant Tony died in the show’s final moments.
One viewer theorised: “My interpretation of the final scene in #afterlife3 is that when the dog dies, Tony dies soon afterwards. There is absolutely no way that he can continue to live without Lisa and his dog.”
While another Twitter user wrote: “Can someone please explain to me,”
They added: “Did Tony die at the end of #AfterLife3 was he a ghost?!? Or was the meaning 'life goes on after someone dies' we are so confused right now!”
And a third fan tweeted: “Ricky please clarify the ending to [After Life]! Does the dog die, then Tony ends it? Or Does Tony die of old age? What happens? Does he die at all or is there another season?
“What did Lenny’s face mean after he took the photo. PLEASE TELL ME!”
Fans will be pleased to know that Gervais has clarified the ending and Tony’s fate. In an interview with Digital Spy, the actor and writer said Tony doesn't die and the ending is meant to be metaphorical.
He said: “It’s just that life goes on, you know? When we’re all dead and buried, that field’s still there, the Tambury Fair is still going, that tree is still there, and it’s basically said that we all die, but not today.”
He added: “That’s what the ending is saying. ‘We all die, but not today’. Enjoy it while you can, life is so finite. Whenever you are born, and whenever you die, it’s all over. So enjoy that bit, that tiny little bit.
“You don’t exist for 13 and a half billion years, then you have 80-90 years if you’re lucky, and then you die, never to exist again. So all you’ve got is experience and then you’re dead and buried and forgotten."
