Amy Schumer reveals online comments about her ‘moon face’ led to health diagnosis

Amy Schumer has opened up about how hate comments led to a shocking diagnosis

Amy Schumer has opened up about how troll comments about her 'moon face' led to a health diagnosis.

The comedian was appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast when she opened up about her health journey.

In October 2024, the 43-year-old had revealed she was living with endometriosis, after repeated comments about her appearance.

The Trainwreck actress wrote on Instagram: “Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face!

“I have endometriosis, an auto-immune disease that every woman should read about.”

This statement wasn’t enough to quell trolls, however, with Schumer lately admitting on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast that she was subjected to constant criticism about her looks.

She said: "I think they’re mad that I’m not thinner, I think they’re mad that I’m not prettier, and that I still feel like I have a right to speak."

But Schumer credits online trolls for helping alert her to a second diagnosis, Cushing syndrome, which is caused when the body has ‘too much of the hormone cortisol for a long time’.

The symptoms of this condition can be high blood pressure, a swollen face and a ‘hump’ between the shoulders.

Speaking to Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, Schumer admitted she wanted to ignore the barbed remarks about her face at first.

But once doctors started putting their two cents in, she started to get concerned.

Schumer recalled: "Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were like, ‘No, no…something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy.’

"At first, I was like ‘F**k off’."

But once she realized that she’d been getting steroid injections for the scars from her breast reduction and Cesarean section, she began to reconsider.

"So I was getting these steroid injections and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome - which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard," Schumer explained.

This proved tricky when it came time to film her next movie, Kinda Pregnant, which premieres on Netflix on 5 February.

Schumer said: "I learned I had this condition, and that I had something called moon face, and I’m starring in a movie - and there’s a camera right in my face.

"I was feeling really down on myself before I started filming this movie… I was, like, really having trouble figuring out how I was going to star in a movie while I had this going on."

But Schumer says she has recovered from Cushing, as she told Cooper: "It just had to work itself out."
