Fans in tears over emotional Matthew Perry tribute at BAFTA ceremony

Fans in tears over emotional Matthew Perry tribute at BAFTA ceremony

They've called it a total 'gut punch'

Fans have been left 'sobbing' over the 'perfect' Matthew Perry tribute at the TV BAFTAs.

Back in February for the BAFTA Film Awards, fans were left incredibly upset that the Friends star was seemingly left out of the memoriam tributes.

At the time, a spokesperson for BAFTA confirmed to Tyla that Perry would be honoured in the TV awards, saying in a statement: "I can confirm he will be remembered in our forthcoming Television Awards."

Well, the promise has been kept as during the evening, which took place at London's Royal Festival Hall tonight (12 May), clips of Perry as Chandler Bing in Friends were played to viewers.

Many fans have since rushed to social media to share their reactions, with one X user praising: "Good to see Matthew Perry being included in the in memoriam section after being left out of the film one."

"A bit teary watching the film of people who have died this year and then I saw Matthew Perry and lost it completely," revealed a second.

A third penned: "That Matthew Perry Moment had me in tears RIP Matthew we miss you."

"The BAFTAs had to end their memorial moment with matthew perry but it still stung seeing it happen," echoed a fourth, while a fifth chimed in: "Watching the BAFTAs rerun and fully sobbed when I saw Matthew Perry at the end of the interview memoriam."

Another wrote: "Sometimes I forget Matthew Perry has passed away. Then he pops up in the memoriam and it hits again."

And someone else added: "Jeez, the Matthew Perry part of that BAFTA ‘In Memoriam’ segment almost tipped me over the edge. Perfectly pitched."

And a final user added: "Matthew Perry’s passing is still a gut punch. I love him so much."

The 54-year-old was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on 28 October last year.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” his family said in a statement at the time.

"Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend."

A post-mortem examination concluded that Perry died from the 'acute effects of ketamine', also listing contributing factors that included 'drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine' - a drug used to treat opioid use disorder.
