Ellen Pompeo once admitted she had a request for the finale episode of Grey’s Anatomy - and it may involve some supernatural elements.
It’s almost been two decades since Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC and unbelievably the medical drama is still going strong.
Initially focusing on a cohort of new surgical interns and doctors at the Seattle Grace Hospital, Grey’s continues to chronicle the love lives, careers and obstacles faced by an ensemble cast teaming with famous faces.
Patrick Dempsey, Sandrah Oh and Millie Bobby Brown have all taken on roles in the show - but at its heart for 19 seasons was Pompeo, 54, who portrayed protagonist Meredith Grey.

While she technically left Grey’s in the mid-season premiere last February, she is set to make at least seven cameo appearances in season 21 this fall.
Years before making her exit public, Pompeo appeared on live television to discuss how she wants the finale of Grey’s to go if it ever ends.
Appearing on the now-defunct The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2019, Pompeo admitted she wanted the original cast to return to send off Grey’s in style.
"I mean, I’d love to have some of the old cast come back, the original cast is just like -” she began before putting her hand over her heart.

“But that probably won’t happen, but that would be the most amazing way to [end it].”
When questioned by Corden, 45, why she didn’t believe her dream could come true, Pompeo quipped: “Some of them were killed on the show!”
Of course, Grey’s bringing back characters from beyond the grave isn’t a new feat - just look at 58-year-old Dempsey’s surprise return as Derek Shepherd six seasons after his death.

At the same time Grey was envisioning Shepherd on a beach, the beloved George O’Malley (T. R. Knight) made a reappearance alongside Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan (Eric Dane).
So it’s definitely possible that showrunner Meg Marinis could elect to bring back the original cast if Grey’s closes its curtains.
But while Pompeo wants all her old friends back in one room she understands that there is ‘a lot of pressure’ to get the final episode right.

"The ending, the final episode, matters so much. Are you kidding me?" she said. "And the fans are never going to be happy, no matter what -- Sopranos, Game of Thrones.
“They're p***ed no matter what you do. So, there's a lot of pressure on that final episode."
You can tune into Grey’s Anatomy season 21 on Thursday, September 26 in the US.
