Ariana Grande fans only just realising hilarious reason why her Oscars gown looked so familiar

The Wicked star was up for the Best Supporting Actress gong during the Oscars last night (2 March)

Ariana Grande fans are only just realising the absolutely hilarious reason why her Oscars gown looked so familiar.

The 31-year-old Hollywood A-lister was up for the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in the hit musical adaptation, Wicked, which marked her first career Oscar nomination.

Unfortunately for Grande, the gong went to Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez instead but it's clear her fans online seem to be far more concerned with the actress' choice of outfit for the red carpet, with many likening it to one particular household object.

She stunned in a champagne-coloured silk and sequin structured Schiaparelli gown that featured a silk bodice and diamond-dripping tutu skirt.

However, people online took no time pointing out that the ballerina-inspired look actually gave off major 'lampshade' vibes, with many rushing to share their thoughts on Grande's glam get-up.

One social media user declared: "It’s giving lampshade."

"Ariana Grande looks stunning but also a little bit like a lampshade," quipped a second, while a third echoed: "Liten Ariana Grande will look stunning in just abt anything but that Oscars dress looked like a lampshade let's not kid ourselves."

A fourth penned: "'Why did Ariana change' she was dressed as a lampshade trying to sit down y'all."

"She looks like a very elegant lamp shade," a fifth piped up.

"I personally love this! The movement it gives is amazing," wrote another and a final social media user added: "I love this dress it’s def unique! I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it recently."

What do you make of the look?

Wicked was up for 10 nominations during the 97th Academy Awards including; Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

It was the latter two categories for which Wicked ended up taking the gong home.

Elsewhere during the evening, Grande's boyfriend, Ethan Slater, who played Boq in the Wicked film adaptation, left fans claiming his awkwardness during one specific interview was beyond a 'hard watch'.

In a clip that has since been posted on TikTok, one reporter asked Slater: "How's your girl feeling tonight?"

The star then awkwardly giggled, before responding: "Oh, you mean Ariana? She's doing great.

"She's so excited, we're all so excited, I can't believe that I get to be in the Oscars, this is amazing."

Viewers of the video, which has since racked up 1.3 million views, were quick to point out just how awkward the interaction was.

One user wrote in the video's comments: "Hard watch, thanks," with another echoing: "Hard watch, they didn't even sit next to or near each other at the Oscars."

And a third quipped: "Like who he think they was talking about fr."

Wildest moments at the 2025 Oscars

Conan O’Brien takes aim at Donald Trump and Drake

Late night host O’Brien had jaws on the floor with several of his gags - after he’d graphically emerged from a nude Demi Moore’s body in a skit referencing The Substance.

In his opening monologue, he hit out at Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón, whose controversial tweets were widely believed to have torpedoed her awards chances.

He quipped: “Anora uses the ‘F-word’ 479 times - that’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist.”

In a later dig on Trump’s disastrous meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he said: “Anora's doing great tonight. Two awards. I think Americans are finally ready for someone to stand up to a powerful Russian.”

For context, Anora sees a stripper face off with a Russian oligarch and his wife after a shotgun wedding with his son.

Most controversially, O’Brien said around the halfway point: "Well, we're halfway through the show, which means it's time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile."

This, of course, a reference to Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, where he performed Drake diss track ‘Not Like Us’.

Kieran Culkin’s chaotic acceptance speech

Culkin took home the first award of the night, winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain. This apparently means his wife Jazz owes him two more children.

He said in his acceptance speech: "About a year ago, I was on a stage like this and I very stupidly, publicly said that I want a third kid from her because she said if I won the award she would give me the kid.

“Turns out she said that because she didn't think I was going to win."

He then said she’d promised him four if he won an Oscar, before adding ‘let's get cracking on those kids’.

He also dropped the first f-bomb of the night, calling fellow nominee Jeremy Strong ‘f**king great’.

Morgan Freeman gives heartbreaking Gene Hackman tribute, but In Memoriam segment causes controversy

Freeman was on hand to introduce the In Memoriam segment, and delivered an emotional tribute to Gene Hackman, who was found dead in his home alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa and his dog last week.

He said: “This week, our community lost a giant and I lost a dear friend.

“Like everyone who ever shared a scene with him I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone's work

“He received two Oscars but more importantly he won the hearts of film-lovers all over the world.”

He says Hackman once told him: "I don't think about legacy, I just hope people remember me as someone who tried to do good work."

Freeman added: "Gene, you'll be remembered for that and so much more. Rest in peace, my friend."

Controversially, Michelle Trachtenberg, who died last week, wasn’t mentioned in the In Memoriam segment.

Anora sweeps awards and Sean Baker makes history

Anora, which stars Mikey Madison, was nominated for six awards and took home five, including Best Picture.

Its director Sean Baker has now become the first person ever to win four Oscars in one night: for Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture.

He said in his acceptance speech for Best Original Screenplay: "I want to thank the sex worker community - they have shared their stories, they have shared their life experiences with me over the years.

"My deepest respect, thank you, I share this with you."

Madison also picked up the gong for Best Actress for the film.

Meanwhile, Adrien Brody took home Best Actor for his performance as a visionary architect who survives the Holocaust in The Brutalist.

And Zoe Saldaña made history by becoming just the third Latina to win Best Supporting Actress, and the first American of Dominican origin to win the award.
