The revelation may surprise you

Richard Madeley has revealed details about his sleeping arrangements with his wife Judy, after she stepped away from the limelight.

Good Morning Britain co-host Richard and his wife Judy Finnigan were once staples of British television.

The pair were the founding hosts of This Morning when the show launched in 1988.

But despite spending copious amounts of time on-screen together, the couple have managed to sustain a 38-year marriage behind the scenes.

And if you want to know the secret to a happy and long marriage, Richard and Judy might have just spilled their secrets.

The 68-year-old presenter revealed that he sleeps in a different bedroom to his wife, specifically when he's hosting the early morning breakfast show.

His co-hosting role alongside Susanna Reid requires him to get to the studio in the middle of the night, hence why the couple sleep in separate rooms.

During an interview on the White Wine Question Time podcast, he said: "When I'm doing Good Morning Britain I sleep in the spare room.

"I do probably sleep a little bit better in bed with Judy but I'm okay on my own."

When contemplating interrupting his wife's sleep, he added: "I wouldn't think of doing that to Judy.

"Apart from anything else, Judy and her sleep, you do not mess with."

Judy, 76, decided to step away from the limelight fully in 2018, but had a successful career as an author following her stint as a presenter.

She also starred as a panelist on Loose Women in 2014 for a year.

Reminiscing on the times when the couple would wake up together for their show, Richard said: "We did This Morning, and Judy and I would get up at the same time.

"The alarm would go off, we'd both get up and roll into our jeans, get in the car, and drive to Liverpool to do the show, and then when we were in London, drive down to the Southbank.

"So we went to bed at the same time and woke up at the same time."

After leaving the This Morning sofa in 2001, they launched the Richard and Judy show on Channel 4, which ran until 2009.

In a Channel 5 documentary about their relationship, Our Best Bits - In Our Own Words, Richard reflected on their first kiss.

He noted: "We were filming in Blackpool, we spend a very long day filming promos, we really hit it off.

"We ended up getting a black cab, because the crew had gone, we went back to Manchester which was a good hours drive.

"It was in the darkness of the cab that we kind of fell for each other really, and kissed."
