Kate Garraway’s daughter had heartbreaking gesture at NTAs as mum fought back tears with emotional admission

GMB presenter Kate Garraway took home the award for Best Authored Documentary

Kate Garraway's daughter has shown her strength appearing alongside her mum and younger brother at this year's National Television Awards (NTAs).

The Good Morning Britain host attended the ceremony with the two children she shared with late husband Derek Draper, 18-year-old Darcey and 15-year-old Billy.

Garraway's husband, a former Labour lobbyist, passed away at the beginning of the year after four-years of Covid complications that required him to have round-the-clock care.

At this year's NTAs, held on 11 September, Garraway was awarded the prize for Best Authored Documentary for Kate Garraway: Derek's Story, a third doc on her husband's health journey that focused on Draper's final year.

The documentary, which follows award-winning films Finding Derek and Caring for Derek, doesn't just chronicle Garraway and Draper's family life but also highlights the work of carers across the UK and the struggles of those living with serious illness.

Accepting the award, Garraway admitted it was 'bittersweet' and explained 2024 would be a year 'of first' for the family following Draper's passing.

"This is a bittersweet one isn't it? It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy," the presenter said.

"I promised them they didn't have to say anything," she continued.

"We're halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It's so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him."

As their mum spoke, Darcey comforted Billy by rubbing his shoulders as he was taken with emotion.

Garraway took to Instagram as she and her kids were going home after the event, thanking her fans for their unwavering support.

"My goodness - thank you all so so much - we are in bits but I promise I won't let you down," she wrote in the caption, giving a shoutout to her fellow nominees, Robbie Williams, David and Victoria Beckham, Rhod Gilbert and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

"Your stories are incredible - it was humbling to be in your group," Garraway continued.

"It means everything to all our family - thank you for recognising carers everywhere and love to you all," she added. "Derek we love you & hope we made you proud."

Recently, Garraway reflected on spending her first wedding anniversary without Draper.

"So it's our wedding anniversary today & feeling super emotional but also so grateful to all that Derek brought into my life," she wrote on Instagram, confirming she and her two children would attend the NTAs 'to celebrate [Derek's] life, the message he wanted heard & to honour all the hard work of doctors nurses & carers everywhere'.
