It's the grand finale we've waited 17 years for, and despite pledging to tie up all loose ends, viewers of last night's instalment of Gavin & Stacey have seemingly still been left with one big question.
Ever since the Christmas Day special was announced earlier this year, writers of the much-loved BBC sitcom - as well as cast and crew members - have been sworn to secrecy over what the last ever episode would consist of.

All fans were told, however, is that the hour-and-a-half long episode would tie up all loose ends - particularly what Smithy told Nessa after she proposed to him on Christmas Day in 2019.
Now, it'd be pretty hard to tell you what the question fans have been left with is, without giving you some spoilers.
So, if you do plan to catch up with the festive special, I'd to stop reading here...
As we say, fans couldn't wait to know whether Smithy had said 'yes' or 'no' to Nessa's big question five years ago - and when the episode opened with plans for a wedding, they thought they had their answer.

Surprisingly, it was soon revealed that Gavin had interrupted the proposal that night, and Smithy had never given her an answer, going on to get engaged himself to nasty-piece-of-work girlfriend Sonia.
In other news from last night's ep, we saw the Essex and Barry gangs trying to make the most of time away from the kids, the episode saw Gavin and Stacey trying to spice up their sex life by incorporated role-play (Introducing Ross and Stephanie), and Pam attempt to acclimatise to life with a recently-retired Mick at home so much.
We also found out that Pete and Dawn had split up - though, spoiler, they do end up back in bed together - and found out that Gwen had a secret boyfriend she'd been seeing behind daughter Stacey, son Jason and brother-in-law Bryn's back.

Jaws were left on the floor when it was finally revealed that the man Gwen had been dating was David Gooch - but more famously known as 'Dave Coaches' - who'd previously been engaged to Nessa all those years ago.
Naturally, when Jason and Bryn were in attendance when Dave's identity was exposed - being left horrified that he was 'back' in their lives - attention was soon drawn to the fact that he's the only one that knows what went on between them on THAT fishing trip all those years ago.
You know, the one that nephew and uncle Jason and Bryn swore all those years ago that they'd NEVER tell?
Well, after new-girlfriend Gwen demanded to know the truth, Dave felt he had no choice, and startling revealing what had happened...
He began by telling viewers - who've waited to find out what on earth happened since the first series aired all the way back in 2007 - that 'it was cold' that night, and that only the tent was up...

Believing they'd finally find out the truth, fans were left perched on the edge of their seats - until the fire alarm went off after Gwen left her omelettes on the stove!
The conversation quickly moved on and devastated viewers never found out what really happened - a reality which isn't sitting too well with some fans.
"so they’re never going to tell us what happened on that fishing trip???" one disgruntled fan demanded.
Sharing a GIF of Kim Kardashian starring at the ceiling in bed, another joked: "Me going to bed still not knowing what happened on that fishing trip".

"I think I speak for us all when I say: BUT WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FISHING TRIP?!" a third went on.
"#GavinAndStacey wow what a finale, After 17 years they got together!!!! BUT WHAG ABOUT THE FISHING TRIP UGHHH, but nonetheless, nearly cried lmao," another continued.
A fifth penned: "Noooooooo Now we will never know what happened on the fishing trip!!"
If we've already told you too much by this point, and you simply can't resist, read on.
In other news from last night's ep, when Gavin finally raised his concerns with Smithy over Sonia's bitter behaviour during their vows, Smithy asked everyone in the congregation with similar worries to stand up.
And after everyone did - including his father-figure Mick - he ended things with Sonia, realising he had 'something better' with Nessa, and fleeing to find her before she jetted-off on a cargo ship.
The pair tied the knot and fans were ecstatic, with the family now officially joined by their 17-year-old son, Neil, the Baby.
