Kym Marsh reveals reason behind putting five pound note inside dad’s coffin

Kym Marsh reveals reason behind putting five pound note inside dad’s coffin

Kym Marsh's father, David, passed away earlier this year

Kym Marsh has revealed the reason she put a five pound note in her dad’s coffin.

There are lots of things that family members sometimes bury with their passed loved ones, such as letters, teddies, and flowers.

But the former Coronation Street star has opened up the touching gesture she made after her dad's death, following an ongoing inside joke between the pair.

Her father, David Marsh, 78, died in January this year, three years after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

He would often appear as a guest on BBC One’s Morning Live with Kym, who is a co-host of the show, to discuss living with the disease and raising awareness of symptoms.

The inside joke blossomed on air, when David used to banter with co-presenter Gethin Jones about Kym lending him a fiver.

Talking to The Sun, 48-year-old Kym said: “Every time Dad came on Morning Live, he would say to Gethin, ‘she’s still not given me that fiver’.

“It was a constant running joke.

“Shortly after dad passed away, I randomly found a five pound note in my car.

“I don’t know if people believe in stuff like this but I don’t know how it got there.”

Following the encounter with the five pound note, she decided to finally give her dad the cash he joked about.

After putting it inside his coffin, Kym said: "There you go dad, I’ve given you your fiver now."

She added: “Whether you believe in it or not, it’s not wrong to take comfort from something.

“It gives you something to hold on to and it gives you hope, all those little reminders.”

A statement announcing David’s death was released on 12 January and read: “A much-loved husband, dad, grandad, great grandad, and friend to many, David passed away peacefully at home on Friday surrounded by his family.

“We are truly heartbroken and ask for privacy at this incredibly difficult time.”

After her dad’s passing, Kym shared a picture of the two together on Instagram.

She captioned the post: “For the first time in my life… I have no words.

“I love you dad. Always and forever. Rest easy Pops. Goodnight godbless.”

Kym also revealed that she would bury her son Archie’s ashes with her late dad, after he tragically passed away at just 21 weeks following a premature birth in February 2009.

Talking on Morning Live, Kym said: “We decided both Jamie [Lomas] and I that we would let Archie rest with my dad.

“So when my dads ashes come back we are going to lay Archie to rest with my dad.”
