Gabby Petito’s mum reveals shocking ‘rude’ question people asked after daughter’s death

Gabby's mum, Nichole Schmidt, spoke about her daughter in a new interview

Gabby Petito's mum has revealed the rude question she was asked after her daughter's death in 2021.

Four years ago, YouTuber and travel influencer, Gabby Petito, went missing while on a road trip across the US with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie.

Gabby, who was aged 22, had been vlogging her journey along the way. But in September 2021, she was reported missing when her mother, Nichole Schmidt, failed to hear from her for over a week.

After searching for Gabby for 10 days, her body was discovered in Spread Creek camping area in Wyoming. An autopsy revealed she died from blunt force injuries to her head and neck as well as ‘manual strangulation.'

Her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, later admitted to her murder in a suicide note, found alongside his body.

Shortly before Laundrie's body was found, the 23-year-old had gone missing from his parents' home in Florida, while the investigation into Gabby's whereabouts was ongoing.

Following Gabby's death, there have been a number of shocking claims that have emerged from the case.

For example, Laundrie's parents - Roberta and Christopher Laundrie - have been heavily criticised for the way they handled Gabby's disappearance.

Gabby's parents have claimed that they contacted Laundrie's parents, urging them to help find their daughter - but they received no reply.

There was also a 'burn after reading' letter found in Laundrie's possession when he died. The note was from his mother, who promised that she would help her son 'dispose of a body' and 'bake a cake with a file in it' if he went to jail.

Roberta has since defended the note as simply an ordinary love letter given to her son on a previous date.

There has been a lot of public interest in the case, and Gabby's mum Nichole has now revealed one question she was asked following her daughter's death.

During a new appearance on The Squeeze podcast, hosted by actor Taylor Lautner and his wife Tay, Nichole spoke about how she handles people speaking to her about Gabby.

"I have people come up to me and ask me questions about the case and the murder and Gabby... that's kind of rude," she explained.

"If I'm having a conversation with you after a while and you feel comfortable to ask, that's one thing but to come up to me and be like, 'so do you think Brian is still alive?' You know? Is that really what you want to talk to me about? That's not what we're going to talk about."

Elsewhere in the podcast, Nichole also spoke about some new details she had recently learned, and explained that the mattress from Gabby's van was never recovered.

After Gabby was first reported missing, her van was found outside Laundrie's parents' home, with Laundrie reportedly having travelled back to Florida without Gabby.

As nobody knows where Petito was killed, her mattress disappearing is a strange detail.

“The van was cleaned out, the mattress was never recovered, and then all the things were packed away in a closet – Gabby's stuff was packed away in a closet," said Nichole.

“I mean, I don’t understand, I don’t get it. Just strange behaviour.”
