Prince Harry had three-word response when someone accidentally called him ‘mate’

Prince Harry was being spoken to by his staff member when he was addressed as 'mate'

Prince Harry’s three-word answer after being accidentally being called ‘mate’ has been shared in a royal book.

According to a book about the family, called Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, Prince Harry’s reaction was exactly as you’d expect.

Written by Valentine Low, the book focuses on the Royal Household, its workers and how each person plays their part in shaping the monarchy.

It also talks about their staff members and in one portion, it looks at the ‘subtle variations’ at how employees address the family.

For example, the book explains that King Charles' staff at Clarence House preferred to greet him as ‘Your Royal Highness’ before he ascended to the throne, and then ‘Sir’ is used too.

But that doesn’t mean everyone is so formal, as Nick Loughran, the former press secretary at Kensington Palace shared that if he was working for Prince William and Harry, he’d take it down a notch with formalities.

Ed Perkins also revealed when at one point he accidentally called him ‘mate’, Prince Harry’s response surprised him.

In the book, as the scene between Perkins and Harry plays out, Low wrote: "When Nick Loughran worked at Kensington Palace as a press secretary, he would call Harry by his first name, but tended to be more formal with Prince William because their relationship was not so close.

"Ed Perkins, who also had a spell as press secretary for the two princes, once accidentally sent a text to Harry saying, 'Hello mate.'”

According to the book, he recalled: “I texted back saying, ‘So sorry, just called you mate. I didn’t mean to.’

“[Harry] wrote back saying, ‘Please don’t worry.'"

That’s certainly a nicer response than other people of that calibre might send back.

But it’s not like it’s unexpected.

Prince Harry has probably been the most relatable Royal in the family.

He’s partied, he’s made mistakes, and he’s fought for the things he believes are right.

Plus, there was that one time he was mistaken for Ed Sheeran at a house party, which is pretty funny and he was allegedly really cool about it.

Well, he was a bit ‘offended’.

According to Margot Robbie, who went on to tell the story to Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show a few years back, it all started when she went to London with her friends.

She explained: “He wasn’t wearing a crown – I don’t know he was a prince.

“Actually, when I saw him in those glasses I was like ‘oh my god, I didn’t know Ed Sheeran was at the party’ and he got really offended and was like ‘shut up.’”

She continued that at first, she was just stoked to be with the singer she mistook him for.

She said: “Everyone now thinks if they come on a night out with me in London, they’ll bump into Prince Harry.

“But I didn’t even know who it was. I’d had a drink or drinks.

“I thought I was hanging out with Ed Sheeran - I was thinking ‘Ed’s a really cool guy’.

“I’m going to take some pictures with him.”
