If you've been anywhere near Netflix since November 2022, chances are that you've at the very least had your interest piqued by 1899.
It's a mind-boggling science fiction TV series that truly has to be seen to be believed, but despite being released to rave reviews, it has emerged that it's unfortunately being cancelled after just one season.
The steampunk-eqsue series focuses on the ill-fated liners, the Kerberos and the Prometheus.

As the Kerberos takes immigrants to what they hope is a new life in America, their journey is overshadowed by the story of the Prometheus, which mysteriously disappeared while at sea.
Things then take an unexpected turn when the Prometheus is discovered on their journey to New York... without any passengers aboard - with one exception, a young boy.
The show's official synopsis reads: "When mysterious events change the course of an immigrant ship headed for New York in 1899, a mind-bending riddle unfolds for its bewildered passengers."

But news of the show's cancellation has been met with outrage from Netflix fans, some of whom had previously described it has 'the best series' on the platform 'hands down'.
One moaned: "This is such disappointing news. Honestly, what is even the point of investing time into Netflix originals when they never make it past the first or second season?"
"The 1899 cast and crew deserve better than this," added a second. "What an incredible tv show. I'm beyond devastated that it has been cancelled."
A third fan said the cancellation was enough to make them want to cancel their Netflix subscription.

They wrote: "If #Netflix is going to cancel #1899Netflix what is the point of having a Netflix subscription?
"If you can't trust Netflix to finish a story why shouldn’t I subscribe for one month every few years and then cancel? There is not a lot in the pipeline."
While a fourth similarly added: "I can't believe one of the best shows of 2022 has just got cancelled. What's the worst is that it ended on a huge cliffhanger and left a lot of questions unanswered.
"Netflix should stop making shows at all since it doesn't want to continue any of them."

Other fans, meanwhile, tried to gain traction to the hashtag #Save1899 in a bid to make the streaming platform change its mind about the show.
The cancellation was announced by one of 1899's creators, Baran bo Odar, on Instagram.
He wrote: "With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.

He added: "That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget."
