Grimes shares why her toddler son doesn't call her mother

Grimes has opened up about why her toddler, X Æ A-12 Musk, who she shares with ex-partner Elon Musk, doesn't call her mother.

The musician, 34, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, made the revelation in an interview with Vogue, which was recorded before the 2021 Met gala. Take a look below:

In the video, the singer explained that she doesn't 'identify' with the word mother and she's sure that her son, who is now two years old, can sense her 'distaste' for the word.

"I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, like, artistically," she said in the video.

"Being a mother feels weird to say. For some reason I don't identify with that word. Which is also really weird because X, he says 'Claire,' but he doesn't say 'mama' - which is so... I'm like, 'How are you...?' Like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word mother."

She added: "I don't even know why I have a distaste for [the word] because I respect… I just, I don't, I can't identify with it, weirdly."

The singer's son was born in May 2020 and while his name was officially X Æ A-12, it had to be changed to X Æ A-Xii so that it was in accordance with California law.

Grimes wrote on Instagram at the time: "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh."

Family law attorney David Glass told People that the child's name was changed because California does not permit 'numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis' on birth certificates.

The musician and tech entrepreneur went on to have another child together, a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, known as Y, in December 2021 via a surrogate.

While the former couple's daughter has a slightly more pronounceable name, Musk did open up about how to pronounce the name of his son to Joe Rogan, Glamour reports.

"It's just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced 'ash.' And then A-12 is my contribution," he said on a podcast. "Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever."

Grimes also explained the thinking behind her son's unusual name on Twitter at the time of his birth.

She wrote: "•X, the unknown variable •Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) •A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent + (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat)."
