Martin Lewis has been brutally targeted by trolls online after sharing a sweet story about his daughter to Twitter.
The Money Saving Expert was forced to delete the tweet about his daughter Sapphire, nine, after he was flooded with comments accusing him of making the whole thing up.
After deleting the harmless tweet, Martin – who just recently won a National Television Award for TV Expert of the Year – described Twitter as 'a horrible place sometimes.'
Martin's now-deleted tweet, which inexplicably sparked huge controversy, had read: "Just been blown away by mini MSE (aged 9).

"I asked her if she knew what the government's job is.
"She simply replied: 'The government's job is to help shape the country.' Brilliant and succinct."
After proudly sharing the interaction he shared with his daughter, Martin was soon met with countless replies from cruel trolls who accused him of making the whole thing up.
Some even went as far as to tag the popular twitter account Didn't Happen of the Year Awards (@_DHOTYA), which calls out people who very obviously make up stories online for attention.

Cynical trolls tagged the Twitter account to suggest that the Money Saving Expert had made the whole story about his daughter up for a few likes and retweets.
When the hate got to be too much, Martin decided to take down the tweet.
Explaining his reasoning, he posted a follow-up tweet which read: "Twitter really is a horrible place sometimes.

"I tweeted a nice little comment about my little girl. Only to get lots of @_DHOTYA replies."
He went on to ask: "Why would I bother making something like that up. I was proud of her. I've deleted it, as i can't be bothered with people who want to ruin it."
Martin later added: "Just to clarify this wasn't the @_DHOTYA account, it was people copying it in."
The person behind the Didn't Happen of the Year Awards even backed Martin up, replying: "Didn’t see the post - but if anybody has ever earned immunity from DHOTYA this year it’s Martin Lewis."

Other fans chimed in to support Martin, too.
One, agreeing with the Didn't Happen of the Year Awards account, wrote: "I think he’s earned a lifetime immunity award. He’s one of, if not the most trustworthy person in the media at the moment. He tells it how it is and all he does is try to help people. Which is more than can be said for many other people. He’s a national treasure."
Another replied: "I didn’t see your tweet unfortunately. There are some unpleasant people on Twitter- but also a lot of us who are happy for others when they post lovely things. Don’t let the nasty lot get you down!"

And a third told him: "Oh Martin, I’m sorry, it must be awful to be the victim of such nastiness. Those of us who are decent people think you are a legend. Please keep tweeting."
