Paul Mescal’s mum has cut her hair ahead of undergoing chemotherapy just hours before it was announced her son had been nominated for an Oscar.
Dearbhla took to Instagram to say she was cutting her hair shorter this week, before going even shorter next week ahead of going into hospital.
In the video showing off her new close cut, she explained: “I feel kind of rock and roll. And then when it comes out, it’ll just be a dusting as it falls out.”

And just hours after she showed off her new-look, the day took a very exciting turn for the Mescal family after it was announced that Paul was up for a best actor at the Oscars for his role in Aftersun.
In a post on Instagram, Paul’s sister Nell shared a screenshot of her clearly over the moon family as they spoke on a video call as well as a sweet shot of her and Paul when they were younger. Captioning the pics, she wrote: “How did this happen?”
In a later tweet, Nell, a singer, said: “My mum got a haircut today in prep for her chemotherapy and then Paul got nominated for an Oscar. Life is so crazy.”

Dearbhla admitted she was doing a bit of housework when she heard the news about her famous son’s nomination.
Speaking to Ray D'Arcy today, she said: “I don’t watch them [the announcements] because I find them way too stressful, I was folding washing. I just waited for the Whatsapp. We have this Whatsapp group and there were shocked faces and crying eyes.
“Nobody knows before it’s announced so it is just this nerve wracking five hours of waiting when you wake up."
In a statement given to the show, Paul said: "This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I'm so utterly grateful.

“I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte and Frankie who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"
Last week, it was revealed that Paul had been nominated for a BAFTA - with his dad saying it was ‘the best medicine’.
Speaking after Nell put on a ‘phenomenal’ appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show, he said: "'It was a good day in the office really.

"The good thing about it was the WhatsApp was all good news this week, my mum isn't well at the moment. It was just the best medicine you could give me.”
I can’t even imagine how he’s feeling right now with the Oscar news announced, can you?
