Billie Eilish reveals sad reason why she ‘lost all of her friends’

Billie Eilish opened up about her life changing due to fame

Billie Eilish has opened up about the reason she lost most of her friends in recent years.

The 22-year-old singer songwriter recently released her album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, to critical acclaim.

In a life that's no stranger to huge accolades, this year Billie won the Oscar for 'Best Original Song' for the Barbie hit 'What Was I Made For' - marking her second Academy Award win to date.

Billie has been the centre of a never-ending media storm since being thrust into the spotlight, and delighted fans when opening up about details of her life.

She came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community in an interview with Variety in 2023 - which had led to her being hailed as a queer icon.

She said: "I love [women] so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.

"I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”

This was followed up with the inclusion of 'Lunch', a song about 'exploring her queerness', on her latest album, with some very steamy lyrics that fans couldn't get enough of.

But it seems all of the details of Billie's life aren't so exciting or joyful.

Sitting down with co-hosts Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver for an episode of their podcast, Miss Me?, Billie opened up about losing friends while gaining fame.

She said: "I lost all my friends when I got famous. All except one - my best friend Zoe, who I’ve known since I was two."

Billie continued: "She’s still my best friend, but she’s pretty much the only one who stayed. When I became famous, I couldn’t relate to anyone. It was really tough.”

She was then pressed on whether she tried to reconnect with them after the hysteria of touring died down.

The singer admitted: "I tried, but I felt resentful. I was so young."

She then added that she had the daunting realisation on her 20th birthday that her best friends were her employees.

Things have definitely looked up since Billie lost those friends, though.

She continued: "I remember looking around the room and realising everyone there was someone I employed. They were all at least 15 years older than me.

“Then, one of my best friends, who worked with me, quit suddenly and stopped talking to me. That was the worst thing that happened to me."

Billie recounted: “I realised I might be alone for real."

She went on: “Since then, I’ve become very distant from my coworkers. I have a hard time being friendly with them because I’m scared of losing them and have a lot of abandonment issues.

“I would get into relationships and that person would be my only friend, even if I didn’t really want to be in that relationship. I felt like that was all I had.”

Noting the happiness in her present life, Billie concluded: “Then I worked really hard on making friends, finding new friends, and reconnecting with old ones. About a year ago, I reconnected with a bunch of old friends, and now I have so many friends.”

We're glad!
