Jessica Simpson celebrates 7 years of being alcohol-free in emotional post about sobriety

She describes the experience as being 'walked into the light'

Jessica Simpson has shared an emotional statement after completing seven years of sobriety.

The 44-year-old star shared that she felt 'free' after giving up alcohol, marking a seven year milestone.

In a heartfelt post to her fans, she documented the moment that she realised there was an 'issue' and made a change.

She had spent the Halloween of 2017 drinking, and admitted that she had struggled to get her daughter Maxwell, 12, and son Ace, 11, into their costumes for a school assembly.

In the post, she shared that she had become an 'unrecognisable version' of herself.

Writing in her memoir Open Book, she reflected on the defining moment in more detail, saying: "I am ashamed to say that I don't know who got them into their costumes that night."

After a seven year journey, she claimed to have 'taken back her light', posting to Instagram on the 1st of November writing: "7yrs ago today I walked myself into the light of being alcohol free."

The emotional post was accompanied by a black and white picture of her the morning after the Halloween night that changed everything in 2017.

In a statement she posted after four years sober, going into more detail about her experience, the singer said: "I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.

"Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted."

Talking about the 'stigma' surrounding alcohol, she noted: "There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic.

"The drinking wasn't the issue. I was. I didn't love myself. I didn't respect my own power."

After opening up about 'accepting' parts of her life which are 'sad' to reflect on, she finally feels 'free' of her demons.

She said: "I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free."

Looking back on her former self, she recognised that she had 'so much self discovery to unlock and explore'.

Simpson is married to Eric Johnson, after the pair started dating in 2010.

They tied the knot four years later, and it's clear that Johnson stood by his wife's side through the difficult journey.

The couple now have three children together, after Birdie Mae Johnson was born in 2019.
